Ding Dong! Avon (not) calling. 😁

Apparently an Avon range will be available in over 100 Superdrug stores from round about now.....just googled it, there is a list of the stores involved printed.

Does anyone remember the Honeysuckle range?
Fifty years ago now (how did that happen) filling
the house with the most gorgeous scent, then
inexplicably discontinued.

Our Avon Lady was a neighbour, always welcome
in our house, with her bag of samples, in the days
when you could leave the catalogue, cash in the porch
safely, come home to cash gone, fragrant goodies in their place.

Avon shops sounds somehow contradictory, although
I hope they do well

My youngest daughter is an Avon lady, has been for many years, but I only buy now and again.

I was an Avon lady in the 70’s i was 19.
I went to peoples houses knocking on doors and quickly realised the elderly ladies on their own just wanted to give you tea and have a chat. They were usually widows but always bought something to make sure you had to come back. It was quite sad.
I wonder how much has changed. There will still be lonely people at home.

In a previous life when we had just moved out of London and continuing my freelance catering had become both impractical and no longer profitable, we were also hit by monthly mortgage rate rises. In desperation I became an Avon lady , my patch being a nearby village/small town.
I wouldn’t say I made a lot of money, but I met some lovely people, many elderly and housebound ladies, also young mums (second cars did not seem as widespread as nowadays) and although a very few were a bit “snooty” about. Avon products it was good fun. I found it incredibly easy to “earn” bonuses (including china and cutlery, none of which I needed!) and if I had put my mind to it I reckon I could have built up my customer base and progressed in the company.
I was alas, also my own best customer!

Looks like old stock though which I'd worry might might not be very good now - I recently chucked out some old Avon perfumes which I'd had unused for years and which smelt distinctly 'off'!

This is interesting. My Avon lady had a fall out with the company recently (they seemed to be owing her money), so I won't be buying anything soon. But I will miss browsing through the brochure for a relatively cheap treat......Can't see myself ordering off the internet somehow.

I bought their hand soaps and bubble bath online. They were great. Why would Avon need to open shops?

I was recommended to buy Skin So Soft when I had a holiday on the Isle of Mull several years ago. I seem to remember that it worked as a mosquito repellent.

Casdon that's interesting- I'd still like to know why though?
Surely Avon would be marketing it as such if there was any research/known reason.

Avon Dry Skin Oil is an excellent mosquito repellent. Used by the US military I believe.

I couldn't find any studies on it though it does contain citronella I think and it also has jojoba seed oil in - which is technically a wax ester I think - so maybe that provides a physical barrier which prevents the mosquitoes "smelling" people (not really smelling, obviously).

I'd love to know if this is true!

SkinSoSoft is the product name, and it certainly works on me. If I don’t wear it when I’m gardening I get bitten to pieces.

My sister has been an Avon representative for 40 years so I’ve been buying Avon goodies for many years. My favourites are SSS dry oil body spray (original) and Planet Spa lavender room/pillow spray and I wouldn’t be without them. I’ve bought a few pairs of cotton pyjamas too and the quality is good.

I worked for Avon for 27 years in their Northampton and Corby Offices and also in National sales and in Poland too! Wonderful Company! The shops are a different way of offering products to customers. Wish everyone involved well!

I always buy the SkinSoSoft online from Avon, it is still effective at keeping the little bitey things in the garden away, and it smells nice and moisturises at the same time.

My first memory of Avon was around 8-9 yrs old. My friend’s mother bought Avon for herself and received those mini lipstick samples (they were so coveted by women) and would give them to us for play. And perfume samples!

Then I had no contact with Avon for about 50 years - when all of a sudden I was thumbing thru one of their catalogs at work because a coworker’s mother sold it. I bought a few items here and there over the years till I retired.

The best thing I ever bought was their natural bristle makeup brushes. Still have them and use - they had unique shapes and stylings.

It’s be #1 cosmetic company in the world.

I was an Avon lady when it first started in U.K. Then we were given a case with samples of products, mainly make up and we went into prospective customers homes and made up the customer.
I also demonstrated Avon at my W.I. I remember making up a middle aged farmers wife who had never used any make up.
Took years off her appearance.

I buy moisturiser, nail varnish, shampoo & room sprays from Avon, usually when they have a good offer on. I’m not over keen on their makeup but the moisturisers are very good, particularly the Cannabis Sativa oil one You can buy on line if you haven’t got a rep. I can’t really picture an Avon shop but would have a browse.

I remember my aunt bought me Topaz for my birthday when I was 14. It sat on my dressing table and I loved it. Unfortunately so did my 2 year old brother who I caught in my bedroom saying 'it was good' and when I asked what was good he showed me the empty bottle. I thought he'd spilled it but when I smelled his breath it smelled of Topaz. I was gutted and he was fine!

It looks like AVON have comandeered some of the WILKO stores?

I dont remember the Daisies one though- maybe it was a bit earlier.Mum bought Avon in the 70's-80's.

But back in the day my mum used to buy Avon from a neighbour/friend, we got Pretty Peach stuff yes i remember that bottle with the peach for a bottle cap and the soap on a rope!- got them for christmas once when i was about 8!- my mum got the Topaz as well as topaz was her birthday stone for November.She got Avon at birthdays & christnas i think.Avon was the start of a new Knock knock joke as well- "knock knock", "who'se there?" "Avon, you're bells broke"!😂😅
