Sex Education

This is an actual extract from a sex education textbook for girls, printed in the early 1960's in the UK.

“When retiring to the bedroom, prepare yourself for bed as promptly as possible. Whilst feminine hygiene is of the utmost importance, your tired husband does not want to queue for the bathroom, as he would have to do for his train. But remember to look your best when going to bed. Try to achieve a look that is welcoming without being obvious. If you need to apply face cream or hair-rollers wait until he is asleep as this can be shocking to a man last thing at night.
When it comes to the possibility of intimate relations with your husband it is important to remember your marriage vows and in particular your commitment to obey him. If he feels that he needs to sleep immediately then so be it. In all things be led by your husband's wishes; do not pressure him in any way to stimulate intimacy. Should your husband suggest Congress then agree humbly all the while being mindful that a man's satisfaction is more important than a woman's. When he reaches his moment of fulfillment a small moan from yourself is encouraging to him and quite sufficient to indicate any enjoyment that you may have had.
Should your husband suggest any of the more unusual practices be obedient and uncomplaining but register any reluctance by remaining silent. It is likely that your husband will then fall promptly asleep so adjust your clothing, freshen up, and apply your night-time face and hair care products. You may then set the alarm so that you can arise shortly before him in the morning. This will enable you to have his morning cup of tea ready when he awakes.”

Sent to me by a friend. I find it quite hard to believe for early 60s - I remember the 60s as being much more fun!!

Blimey!
Had a chuckle at ‘small moan’

Sweetsnbooksnradio4 Wed 29-Nov-23 18:03:37

I thought the same - 1860 surely!

Congress! 😳

Surely that was written as a spoof?

Yes, I think it was.

Snopes says it’s not original and is a more recent ‘mock up’.

I’ve seen other similar things doing the rounds on Facebook.

Still amusing though.

Going back to ‘I’m a Celeb’ (sorry) Nella keeps throwing out the line ‘I’m just a girl’ and she’s an influencer! Heaven help us.

She's a 26 year old woman!

An early morning bath feels so decadent!

welbeck Tue 28-Nov-23 21:14:16

it may be american i suppose; i can't imagine many people having a bath early in the morning in the early 1960s.
heating the water at that time would have been an issue.
for many it was a once or twice weekly event, quite a few didn't have bathrooms.

It’s funny thinking about how sex ed has improved. It occurred to me recently, that as a lesbian I didn’t really have any actual sex education because obviously it was all focused on heterosexuality.

I remember not really being sure exactly when I lost my virginity, because it wasn’t the orthodox way - of course, now I realise that virginity is just a construct and that sex can be defined in different ways, but I really was rather clueless.

I assume I worked it all out, unless my wife has been too polite to say anything for the past 20 years…

"Congress will be upstanding"
will never sound the same. TUC Conference.

Not sure I like the sound of 'unusual practices' 😄

Haha me neither, tho it reminded me of either Wolf Hall or the sequel on tv when the innocent and a bit dim Queen told her family that Henry wanted her todo things that she didn’t want to do.The family all looked at each other and gently asked what kind of things? The Queen said something like ‘ he wants me to ride with him to Southampton to inspect the fleet’ 😂

I don't recall any sex education at my convent grammar school but it does sound like the advice I used to read in women's magazines and ignored, as I have never known my place.
I do remember being behind a woman in the butchers, who asked for a piece of steak for her husband and three beef burgers for her and the children - I watched the butcher's lip curl.

I don’t think this is a spoof. My brother in law had much the same attitude to marriage in the 60s and 70s. Men only marry virgins- other women are just for the purpose of sewing wild oats, women should know their place, do as the man dictates. His only daughter, my niece, hasn’t spoken to him or his dutiful wife for years and they are estranged from their grandchildren and great grandchildren. She, however, is happily married to someone whose attitude is very different from her Dad’s.

Most of us had long hair and didn't need to use rollers
If only blow drying had been invented then, I might have been able to tame my hair.
Then there was thst other old wives' tale - don't wash your hair when you're having your monthly!!

Sex education at my all girls' school was very much lacking.

Bella23 Tue 28-Nov-23 18:02:44

I can't remember any sex lessons in the sixties only from the smutty boys in my class they always seemed to know more than the girls. My mums Catholic friend gave me a booklet when I started my periods which I never read, maybe the book was written by nuns or Jesuits..
Sexual Congress does seem very old-fashioned, I thought it was going to say take a towel on honeymoon. I can remember being told that by an older woman and thinking surely they provide towels in hotels.
Most of us had long hair and didn't need to use rollers. The swinging sixties was in full throw, some didn't even wear a bra.

Saggi Tue 28-Nov-23 17:58:44

Kids these days have a lot more sensible attitude toward sex than we ever did!
And I find they’re not as obsessed with it…..the more you ban things …the more people wanna try it!

Not in my school …in early 60’s we had proper sex Ed …separate clssses for girls and boys though ….at about 12 upwards.
Apparently now at my grandkids school it’s ’all in it together’ ..and if my grandson is to be believed …no sniggering!

Notagranyet1234 Tue 28-Nov-23 16:51:50

No wonder I'm divorced 😂

Grammaretto Tue 28-Nov-23 16:47:18

I bought or was given the book the new childbirth in 1969 while expecting my first baby. It was supposed to tell you about pain free labour etc but the thing that stood out for me was the advice for coping with a young baby. Don't bother to iron the nappies was one such and to sit down to iron. I thought the author had an ironing fixation!

Mojack26 Tue 28-Nov-23 16:40:29

Sounds pre war to me!🤣Type of language and style but hilarious..'Congress'🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Katie59 Tue 28-Nov-23 16:39:12

A throwback to the 1920s when the man was the breadwinner, obviously written by a man and not challenged because the alternative was worse in those days

MrsKen33 Tue 28-Nov-23 16:33:37

Think I may have said this before, but the first time I went to tea with DH p’s family, as a student in 1962, his father had a plate of ham. We didn’t. When said father wanted his tea cup refilled he just held it up. DH mother leapt to her feet and filled it immediately. Not a word was said. I think not much changed although they lived into their late eighties.

welbeck

that reminds me of families i've read about, in the past, i hope, where the men/boys were always served first and given the best portions.
i've never actually seen this.

When I had Sunday lunch at my grandparents - early 60s (I was 15, my male cousin was 14). He always got twice as much food as me even though I was a skinny girl with a big appetite. He also left a lot of it so I volunteered to clear the table and cleared his plate in the kitchen!
