People saying Merry Christmas in November

I'm not joking here... April of 2022...I had a customer ask me if I had a nice Christmas. APRIL! She hadn't been away for weeks, she comes in every week without fail for a natter and knows I'm Atheist!

Around here in Appleby they start saying Merry Christmas....or that absolutely hideous Happy Holidays...here in the 1st week of November and putting up decorations in shops/businesses! Absolutely nuts! So I know exactly what you're saying!

I'm Atheist and never celebrate/have any interest but even I know Christmas doesn't start until 25th December!

Then there's all the Black Friday/Cyber Monday email rubbish to shove out of the way too!

I don’t mind anyone saying Happy\Merry Christmas but my heart sinks after Christmas when everyone says ‘Did you have a nice Christmas?’And the answer is usually ‘ yes it was quiet, just family but very nice….’ 🤭

Recently some of my American relatives posted photos from Thanksgiving celebrations with the words: "The holidays have begun".

HolidayS, plural.

After having relations living in the States I realised they talk about Holidays to cover all Faiths and Creeds and that is why they make so much of it. They can all join in with the celebration and often have a family photo on their cards.
DD had trouble finding actual Christmas cards to send to England in time for Christmas. One year we got a happy Hannukah she knew the sentiments were the same and we wouldn't mind.

I am a singer and of course rehearse christmas music earlier than december but that is for a reason. Other than that I am a traditionalist and very bossy about it in my own area!! I will not even contemplate anything to do with christmas until bonfire night is over. Everything in its place. It ruins it for children I think as that lovely anticipating things is lost when you do things too far in advance. so after bonfire night the next thing is making christmas cake or whatever and checking on posting dates for overseas friends by normal mail not airmail!! I avoid as much as possible any over decorated places, if i go into a cafe that is playing christmas music in november or even first week december I will politely ask for it to be switched off. If I get a negative reply I get up and leave! dont come singing carols at my house before the last week before christmas day!! I am not a scrooge and love it all at the right time. spend many hours singing in concerts, carol groups for charity etc etc. when I used to do hospital car had many patients who lived alone and my little gift to them used to be a little paper plate on which I had put home backed sausage rolls 2 made with flaky pastry, 2 very posh mincepies which were made with butter and orange juice pastry and home made mince and then a spoonful of philadelphia cheese mixed with sugar. Very rich but delicions and a few nuts etc and a satsuma or something. I enjoyed making them and it meant they had a little special treat to go with a christmas drink or whatever. So my place is very much everything in its time and place to enjoy and not ruined by overkill!!

I have been sorting decorations out until this late hour determined to have the house beautifully decorated. It’s been a rough time for us lately and still is so we need some cheer.
I am just praying that after Christmas there is a brighter year ahead.
These are troubled times world wide and on the domestic front especially for us at home. If someone says best wishes I personally wish them well they might need some cheer too.

People mean well when they say it though, so it's pretty harmless. And a tiny spark of light in this dark world at present.

My birthday is 6th January 12th night all decorations and tree all down. Nobody celebrates it much but loved when I was living in Spain it’s Three Kings Day and lots of fun.

I always feel sorry for the 3 Kings in our Nativity Set- they have to wait at the far end of the mantelpiece, inching their way along -and just as they get there- Bang! That human whisks them away, wraps them in tissue paper and puts them in a box in the loft

We are having our Christmas lunch on 21st February for the very reason Maizie D states. February is a dreary month so we will have something to look forward to, December is so busy and so much going on we don't need it then. Everyone to their own. We will however not be saying Happy Christmas in February, just Cheers!!!!

Bea65 What really gets my goat is town centre Christmas lights switched on halfway through November. Northumberland is a unitary authority and our council tax pays for lights in Berwick, Alnwick, Hexham, Morpeth, Ashington, Blyth, Cramlington and Ponteland. Surely the 1st of December is soon enough when you also consider the energy so many lights use? Some say it's to get people into the town centres to spend money but I don't believe most people wait till it's dark to go shopping nor will they spend any more over six weeks rather than four! I'm considering a freedom of information request to know how much it costs to run the lights in eight town centres for two weeks in November... I like the lights. They are a cheerful sight but December is enough!

Oh dear - I have wrapped most of my families Xmas presents as time is rushing by and very busy doing music stuff 🎶- Xmas related of course ! But yes too early to say Happy Xmas !

My sister lives 4 hrs away from me. She'll be down this weekend and when she goes back, I'll definitely be wishing her a Merry Christmas.

It honestly wouldn’t remotely bother me if anyone wished me a Merry Christmas tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here’s a lovely tasteful decoration someone’s MiL has sent them (on MN) and they don’t know how to tell her they don’t want it!
A six foot inflatable dinosaur, anyone? Black Friday bargain at £25 from Homebase!
