I remember when going to the pictures aka the cinema cost 1/9d not sure about cost of fish and chips because I only got 6d a week pocket money, so needed to save up to see a film - by which time it wasn’t on anymore,

This reminds me of the tale often told by the older generation when I was a child that in their day, 2/6d would pay for a trip to the pictures, fish and chips after and enough change for the bus home!

Was fish and chips ever a cheap meal?
Maybe someone older than me can remember prices in the 50s and 60s?

I know it didn't seem cheap to me in the 70s and 80s when we had less money.

Mogsmaw, do you live in Britain? What Elaine1 has written means to any native English speaker, regardless of ethnicity. 'we went to a fish and chip shop this evening and bought a large portion of fish and chips, took it home where we divided it into 2 portions and each of us ate half.'

Or as Elaine1 says 'Paid £9 for large fish and chips tonight which did both of us.' which means exactly the same thing but is more succinct.

It is something lots of us do, especially us oldies as a large prtion of fish and chips is more than enough for two and cheaper than 2 small portions,

Had fish and chips last night this is a good time of the year to indulge. Live in small welsh seaside town The quality is good and the chippies have fish wars and the fish gets much bigger with few visitors around

I understand that, but if you’re eating in you can’t both share a portion. If you’re at home you can order 1 and divide it between you. I think we all understand that eating in a restaurant or cafe will be a different price than a takeaway.

DH and I have discovered the most glorious chippy in Glasgow. It is traditional Italian, run by third generation, under a railway arch and 2 fish teas ( 1 large 1 small ) are change from £20.
Last time went we tasted the most delicious black pudding which they were happy to sell us. Absolutely fabulous service and value.

Some of these prices seem astronomical. I always think of the UK as a ‘fishing nation’ with lovely haddock ,fresh kippers etc. We don’t get haddock,most of our fish in a chip shop is flake which is actually shark but they don’t call it that ( can’t think why !) Apparently lobsters and crayfish prices are through the roof so won’t be getting any for Christmas!

I've often wondered why, when Australia is surrounded by sea and many large cities and towns are coastal.
Barramundi (not farmed) and chips is delicious.

Two cod, one portion of chips (more than enough for two), one large mushy peas was £18.50 last week.
It has gone up quite a lot recently but so have their costs.

I think the price of domestic fuel is driving the price up. It can’t be cheap to get and keep oil or dripping to boiling point and keep it there. Last time I went to our chippie, it was just under seven pounds for a small portion of cod and chips, but they are always fresh and second to none, with plenty of takers.

Maybe eat your Fish and Chips in daytime at an Ember Inn - it was still 8.29 last time I looked and you get free heating while you eat it !!!

Someone we know told dh yesterday that he’s been quoted £5k to insure his new Tesla. This is a reasonably sedate bloke of 50 odd, not a boy racer. This was in Oxford.

Dh heard elsewhere yesterday that someone in a fairly affluent London postcode, has been unable to find anyone to insure his Range Rover - apparently because so many in that area get nicked!

How funny daughter just messaged me to say she has had to sell her Defender as the insurance quote was 10K!

They live in rural Cheshire.

I've given up on our local shop; the food was excellent, and we enjoyed a fish and chip supper from time to time. However the cost has almost doubled in a year, and the quality has gone down dramatically.

Bite off their arm. £7.50 is a good price but sad that the historic fishing industry in hull has been decimated. Is that post Brexit or earlier, sorry I live a way away and don’t know hull.

The “Cod Wars” was the beginning of the end, this started in the 1970’s, many countries then started their exclusion zones.

I don’t think fish and chips has ever been cheap? Years ago when our girls were young the 4 of us used to go round to my mum’s on a Tuesday teatime. She’d set the table, warm the plates in the oven and butter half a loaf of Warbie’s bread and Himself & I would go round to the chippy. Food of the gods - and we were always so grateful for our weekly treat. It seemed expensive then to be honest. Pro rata to wages anyway.
