UK pensioners forum

There was a spin off forum called the Common Room. It was run by those the aggressive ones threw out in the early days I think.

It was a bit anodyne and very much "run" by a few I thought, but generally much "nicer".

Not a place where you could learn much, but a nice place for a chat or several.

I used to be on that forum a few years ago. It was run by an unpleasant clique and woe betide if you disagreed with them, There was a lot of trolling and no one ever called them out.

I wont bother saying any more about them.

I might consider labelling someone a Tory posh boy rather bigoted in fact.

It's a lazy slur and quite meaningless.

I wonder why GN won't allow a Benefits section on the forum. Seems a reasonable thing to have.

I have been on GN for many years now and have had a little dabble on other sites but always return 'home' to GN.

Quite! My comment was referring back to the OP calling DC a "boy", which assumes youth.
But at least a lot of GNs have a sense of humour.

It does provide an interesting anthropological study.

Perhaps people who define themselves primarily as pensioners are, on average, less knowledgeable, articulate, able to find and sift the facts, etc than those who are more likely to define themselves by their pre-pension occupations? A lot of Gransnet posters have retired from responsible positions in professions where they were used to getting their ideas sorted out before shouting out an opinion.

I agree - GN posters - many it seems - have held responsible positions in various professions etc and are articulate and intelligent.

That's not the impression I got when I looked at the PF(UK) a couple of years ago and decided not to become a member. Opinions were many, facts were few. And I got the distinct feeling that views on various matters were welcomed, but a wider debate on them - not so much.

Of course, the dynamic might have changed since then. I haven't bothered to investigate.

This was the first forum I joined - this was pre-brexit. Later I use to check in and report back to GN on some of the comments because thought we needed to know just what policies, and how far-right some people are. Having said that they a) are a small minority and b) generally older pensioners.

At one time you could, if you were so inclined, go into an area with an extra password - you would need a strong stomach or be staunchly racist to go there. Having said that they were not particularly democratic (putting it politely) and, a bit like on here on occasion, accuse everyone who disagreed with them of rudeness and worse while driving them off the forum with much, much stranger comments.

I am sure it would be home from home for a few on here. But to be honest I would guess just a few. I stopped posting (and being attacked) whe I found GN but I had made three good friends - we were all pro EU - who left. We kept in touch via other means. Sadly, the one I talked to most, who they had basically shredded, is no longer with us.

I can see a few of the old guard names-wise, but a lot if new ones too. Chris, the owner did allow a Benefits Board too, which, so far, GN have not.

Definitely not advertising UK pensioners forum, and yes it does have some very unpleasant views, all migrants are benefit scroungers etc. I am not a 'leftie' either, I am middle of the road in terms of politics. But when some one posts a reply to a post of mine with a picture of Tory posh boy David Cameron as proof of Labour's financial incompetence without mentioning the mess the Tories have made, I do tend to roll my eyes!🙄

Didn't know there was one. But I will stick with GN . Like others have said we have our fair share of bigots plus,ageist,racists etc here but they are soon dealt with.

But we do have wonderful caring people that help,advise ,understand and give friendship to people who need it on a variety of threads . I have been helped no end here and long may GN continued.

I had a quick explore and thought it seems interesting . When I'm less busy I'll investigate further. Didn't notice any vile-ness really.

I second that. Gransnet has its share of the uninformed, un-knowledgeable, inarticulate and obsessed, but most exchanges are conducted politely and without personal insults.
