I just saw a headline about Anthony Armstrong Jones and his regular affairs. It said he had a secret 'love child' while married to Princess Margaret.

All three of my children were 'love children' but I was married to their father i.e. my husband. I really dislike the accepted idea of a 'love child' as the product of an illicit affair. What does that say about the child or children conceived and born within the marriage?

Do you have word of phrase you dislike?

Any government minister saying “we are delivering for the British people”. - please don’t include me in that.

‘Lessons will be learned ‘…..NO they won’t !!

How about the ubiquitous "opportunities were missed"?

Those wretched opportunities - always trying to prevent someone from doing their job properly!

You've done good (good what???) instead of you've done well.

Text instead of texted. ‘I text her and said …’. No!!!

Hubby. Kiddos, Fur babies.

grannybuy I just received a text message that began, "I should of went with my instinct." Here in the North East a lot of people 'of went' rather than 'have gone'. 😭

tictacnana Mon 18-Dec-23 19:20:33

Ofsted words … any of them.

Mine are
Holibobs and crimble especially used by adults , ditto kiddies instead of kids , kiddies reminds me of the child catcher in Chitty chitty band bang .
I also hate fur babies and rainbow bridge . I’ve even heard grand fur babies. Ugh
Hubby, hubs or hubster .
The wife. Wifey
Other half , you’re a whole person !!!
Or even worst my better half , usually said by men about their wives/partners.
Also agree with we’re pregnant.
People who use asap and pdq.

Celieanne86 Mon 18-Dec-23 18:49:08

I’ve been reading all these wonderful comments and I agree with them all but especially

Would of instead of Would HAVE
Myself instead of ME
Fur baby for Pets…what’s wrong with saying my dog or cat I did
Parents calling their children Mate, they are not your mate I tell my children off for saying it

And an embarrassing incident in our church when a visitor asked CAN I GET SOME WATER and I replied YES OF COURSE YOU CAN and indicated the water cooler.

The 'journey' cliche seems to be applied to anything and everything! It's usually something twee and it certainly should NOT be used for having cancer!

DonnaB5959 Mon 18-Dec-23 18:23:26

Agreed. Cancer is NOT a journey!!

DonnaB5959 Mon 18-Dec-23 18:22:32

Your thoughts are valid.

Back story. What was wrong with history ?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 18-Dec-23 17:41:04

Journey. It seems you have to go on a bloody journey for everything.

Diplomat Mon 18-Dec-23 17:37:52

'It's been an incredible journey'
Calling children 'kids'
'Sat' instead of sitting
Blasphemy
'The wife'
'Proply' instead of 'properly'

... and "toileted"

Nurses shouting across the ward, "has Mrs xx been toileted yet?"

Agree with many of these, special bug bear is H pronounced haitch. There's a recorded message on one of the tax sites where a woman says it about six times in quick succession. 😩. Holibobs, of instead of have eg "I'd of gone if I could". Also, the current seemingly ubiquitous pronunciation of sloth to rhyme with cloth, an Americanisation. In my mind it rhymes with oath. My little grandson and I have fun battles about it as he only seems to hear it on American TV shows.

polly123 Mon 18-Dec-23 17:16:34

My bad, would of, less than instead of fewer than when appropriate, can I get, fur babies etc. Also, various phrases beloved of politicians who don't have single original thought or word in their head, such as 'and that is why', 'ordinary working people' and many more. Perhaps they all go for robot training and are given vocabulary to use.
