Do/Did you collect autographs?

I did as a child and had a number of celebrity autographs. I binned it years ago

When I was younger, I remember collecting autographs for a while.
When we went along Blackpool pier, I collected autographs from Ruby Murray, The Beverley Sisters, George Formby, and Morecambe and Wise.
Those were the days!

I used to collect autographs of famous ballet dancers. It was an excuse to speak to them after a performance. I wrote to those I didn’t manage to meet. I remember writing to Margot Fonteyn when I was nine. They were mostly very obliging and sent me signed photographs,

I have a friend who is still (in her eighties) an avid collector of autographs. Her album is quite remarkable.

I had an autograph book when I was at school, and only collected from friends.
I still have it.
But then I collected signatures, notes etc from friends and family on my 60th, 70th, and 80th birthdays.
Plus on our 60th Wedding Anniversary. It was nice to see the book passed around and folk chatting and signing. Happy days.

When I was a teenager in the late 50's and 60's I had every single autograph of all the stars. Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, The Beatles, you name it, there wasn't one pop star/group that I didn't have the autographs for.

When we married in 1967, after our honeymoon, we went to visit my parents and I saw that my dad was having a bonfire in the garden. He was burning all my precious books and photosgraphs I had taken on my Brownie 127 camera. I asked him why and he said that he thought I wouldn't want them anymore. Even my autograph book that had pink, blue and purple pages were destroyed. What should have been a happy time was ruined as I looked after my possessions and never, ever once thought my dad would burn everything, it was as if he was saying, this is no longer your home. I fell out with my parents as my mum had let him burn my treasures but my dad died a few months later and the rest of our married lives was taken up caring for my mother.

I still cannot forget the day I walked into the garden of my parents home and saw the bonfire.

There used to be a stall in the market that sold autographs. I asked them which was the most daughters after and I was surprised when he told me it was Doris Day.

I collected autographs as a teenager, Inhad the Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, Eric Clapton, the Hollies and dozens more. I sold them a few years ago for £££s

Yes I did as a child and were mostly of the football team I support. It was in a golden period for my team. Also had one of a Corrie star who came to open our Christmas fair William Roche.

That’s very sad, GrannyGrunter. I can understand very well how that memory has stayed with you.

Oh how awful GrannyGrunter. I still get upset about the fact that my mum must have thrown away a photo I’d taken of all of my dolls. I think she thought that, as I’d left home things like that didn’t mean anything to me any more. But I still had all the other photos. I wonder if there were complicated things going on in your dads mind about his daughter growing up; back then men didn’t talk about emotions.

I am the proud owner of an autograph book which has the signatures of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst in it - the golden trio of the World Cup in 1966. The signatures are from the very early 70s, so the book also includes Harry Redknapp, Frank Lampard senior and all the rest of the West Ham first team and reserves plus the manager (Ron Greenwood), coaches and scouts. A close relative was a young player with West Ham in those days and passed the book round during a training session.

No pop stars, though!

You can tell I wasn't a "girly" girl in my early teens!!
