I’m watching Love it or List It, the hosts are driving me nuts with their mispronunciation of Caradoc…..it’s NOT Cara doc!

merlotgran Wed 27-Dec-23 22:22:31

What is it then?

rafichagran Wed 27-Dec-23 22:37:08

No idea either.

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Dec-23 22:40:26

Car A doc

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Dec-23 22:45:41

That's not clear either - the emphasis is on the second a

Is this really so important?
I can’t count the number of Scottish place names I hear with the emphasis on the wrong syllable let alone risible mispronunciations.
So what?

How true, hearing Glasgow as “glass cow” always really grates.

Most people never even try to get Welsh pronunciation right. Put off by the lack of vowels. However a decent try, it is often phonetic , would be much appreciated.

Sparklefizz Thu 28-Dec-23 08:20:59

I noticed it. They should have taken note of the way his wife pronounced his name.

Yes, that's what I meant 🙂

It's a hill fort in Shropshire - Caer Caradoc
Also a Gwent warrior and Knight of the Roud Table.

It’s Caradog not Caradoc!

cornergran Thu 28-Dec-23 13:54:18

We’ve just watched it on catchup. Mr C is Welsh. Initially shrugged saying just another mis-pronoumciation. The village he comes from, to my English eyes, has nothing that looks like a vowel, my poor Dad was forgiven for never quite saying it properly, although he did try. By the end of the programme Mr C was really irritated. Usually very laid back he commented that names are important and he was disappointed the presenters didn’t at least try to get it right. He has a point I think.

I thought it was a place and not a person's name!

I was born in Kirkcaldy Scotland, that foxes many people.

Farzanah Thu 28-Dec-23 14:05:03

I live just down the road from Caer Caradoc, and it’s pronounced all sorts of ways round here. No one bothers, they know what is meant.
Great hill walk btw.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 28-Dec-23 14:08:57

Surely people presenting a programme should find out how to pronounce places they are in, or talking about!

Granted Kirkcaldy, Charleygirl5, but what about Milngavie?

Yes, I did that walk and the Long Mynd and Stiperstones many years ago!
A lovely part of the country, Farzanah
