Looking Good - Who makes the effort?

Relationships whether married or not are important to us all but in a relationship who makes the effort to look good or should we?. A few days ago a Grandma friend of mine said “I don’t bother for him any more, he’s lost interest” I found that strange, my wife is much younger than me and yes I make the effort. I wear things that I think makes me look good, I work out as I get beyond my 62 years I will continue. What about you guys? Do you think like me or the opposite and does it make a difference to you or is it a waster of time bothering.

I’m so pleased to read that you are getting your “mo-Jo” back after all your treatment Grand2dogs.
Sometimes, it can be hard to make an effort, and I would guess that many of us have felt that way at times. (I certainly have).
Personally, I like to make an effort at being smart and tidy even in casual dress, though I don’t bother much with makeup unless I’m going out somewhere. Being clean, smart and tidy is important to me - it’s not especially done for anyone else, but I suppose they benefit from the effort I make 😁.

Thanks BlueBell I think having the rain check by other people has really stimulated my thoughts. When I was younger I played a lot of sport and represented my County and carried that theme through life. I understand how people look good for themselves it’s brilliant I guess that’s why I make the effort as it’s so easy to stop bothering, there’s something in me that just makes me do it.Thanks for your kind comments.

I have never 'dressed up' to attract a man, so it follows that I have never had one to slob for after I had 'caught' him.

This, however, doesn't mean that I have never formed a partnership or got married. It means that all my relationships have been based on the mutual attraction of equals, and, since I have always been economically independent I have never needed a man for his income. I am not now and never have been a kept woman.

I was brought up to believe that dressing well, which has nothing to do with expenditure, and looking well-kempt, for either sex (as it was in my youth) was an essential part of self respect.

I have always respected myself, I have always dressed well (hoever you define the word)

I’m a game of two halves. I do exercise and look after my health, and think I’m always clean and presentable, but certainly don’t dress up or put make up on for a day at home.

When the family arrived on Christmas Day and I’d been cooking all morning, I dashed upstairs for a 5 minute transformation - whipped off the pinny, got busy with the hairbrush and makeup, threw on the jewellery and shoes.

When I reappeared, DSIL made a play of looking behind me and claimed he was wondering where the old washerwoman had gone. It’s a good job we get on. grin

Grand2dogs I love your positive attitude and taking the initiative in dealing with your health issues. It is so important to maintain self esteem, taking a pride in your appearance and generally having a friendly attitude towards others. I wear clean, comfortable clothes indoors, in the garden and walking the dog, and always shower/wash hair, apply a little makeup and perfume each day. I make more effort when going shopping, and even more if out for a meal or the theatre.

Grand2dogs Thanks. Glad you found something that works for you.

Grand2dogs you can call me a guy anytime you want I don’t mind the greeting and use it myself it’s in pretty everyday use now and covers all genders The people that don’t like it, connect it with the old male version of a guy being a male form and haven’t moved on
Anyway back to the question I think it’s important to keep in style and keep yourself looking as good as possible I shower and wash hair every morning and never go out without a bit of make up and earrings on, ( nothing heavy) would feel naked without my earrings
I don’t have expensive clothes but keep up to date with the fashion of the day ….but not young peoples stuff like torn jeans or crop tops (😂)
The other day a friend spoke to me about colouring hair something I ve never done I said what on earth made you think I coloured my hair I ve never done it in my life she said well you always so trendy I presumed you did A complement indeed

I have no man in my life I dress for me and to make me feel good
Carry on looking after yourself it’s important for our well being

I dress appropriately and for my lifestyle, which is outdoorsy. So trousers, sweaters wellingtons (this time of year), Barbour, hat and gloves. No makeup, but skin care, nor usually jewellery.
Indoors trousers snd sweater, no makeup but skin care.

If I’m going out - it depends - so to a casual restaurant, it will be smart casual stuff jewellery, skin care - no makeup.

Smart restaurant or theatre, party etc - usually a dress with jewellery, makeup, dressier coat.

Special evening do - black tie do - so then it is an effort getting an evening dress out of it’s box etc. 😡 so yes then I make an effort I suppose.

I am happiest in my outdoors stuff.

I don’t “make an effort” although was amused that personal hygiene was considered doing so!

I simply dress appropriately.

Hi Quote HowVeryDareYou2, that’s me too GPA ANCA positive when I was diagnosed instead of thinking bad things I went out and bought a new push bike and started a low carb plan to reduce weight gain. It worked! I just wanted to still be me. Good luck.

HowVeryDareYou2 Thu 28-Dec-23 21:39:21

Grand2dogs It's good that you take care of yourself. I'm glad you're feeling better than you did - I have ANCA-positive Vasculitis (legs, feets, hands) so gained weight on steroids (13 weeks of them) this year. I can't wear high heels, but I have my hair done (coloured), wear make-up and perfume every day, and wear colours that suit me. I do those things for me, always have done. My husband of 43 years still finds me attractive, anyway smile

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 21:26:38

I'll scrub up tomorrow because we're out for dinner.

Oreo

Callistemon21

I showered, blowdried my hair, perfumed, put on full makeup including false eyelashes, best dress and high heels then spent the day cleaning and working through 7 loads of washing.

But at least I look utterly gorgeous 🙂

But, but, I saw you through the window and you had your trackies on and hair like Ken Dodd so don’t come it!😂

😂😂😂

Oops, you obviously know me!!

kircubbin2000 Thu 28-Dec-23 18:42:42

This is the first Christmas I have not got dressed up and no one seemed to care or notice. My son said its only us.
I have put on so much weight since covid that my nice things don't fit and I noticed other gran had a new outfit.
I will try and lose some weight now but hard to do with the bad hip.

grumppa Thu 28-Dec-23 18:23:01

I always try to look smart and suitably dressed for the company I am keeping. [Note to self: must polish these shoes.]

Oreo Thu 28-Dec-23 17:58:25

I think in any relationship, that if one person makes an effort and the other never does they need a bit of a talking to.

Jaxjacky

I’ve no problem with being addressed as ‘guys’ Grand2dogs it’s very usual now, a friendly greeting, imo carry on.

Yep!

Oreo Thu 28-Dec-23 17:51:03

Casdon

It should be nothing to do with being in a relationship? Making the effort to feel and look good is all about us and our self esteem. I make the effort, for me.

This I agree with.

Purplepixie Thu 28-Dec-23 17:48:30

It’s good that you are getting your confidence back. I lost mine years ago after a very abusive marriage but gained it back plus some!

MrsKen33 Thu 28-Dec-23 17:43:36

I’ll burst into flames rafichagran. ….shall I ?

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 17:36:52

I must take DH to task, he's wearing ancient, faded chinos and an old polo shirt.
At least he's brushed his hair (what's left of it,)

rafichagran Thu 28-Dec-23 17:31:59

MrsKen33

Besides which Grand2dogs most of us are not ‘guys*. We are ladies or women.
I am not male and in no way connected with a bonfire

Oh lighten up.

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 17:24:26

I'm not offended either but I just took a look at DH and what he's wearing.

🙂

MrsKen33 Thu 28-Dec-23 17:22:35

Not offended Grand2dogsthat is too harsh a word. Just dislike being called a guy.
