Fed up of seeing Acronyms in comments

Why does everyone, when making comments on social media or sites like these always use Acronyms. DH, dear husband, DD, dear daughter, it drives me bonkers. Have people forgotten how to write in a normal fashion, the way comments or stories should be written.

It makes no wonder that children and many adults cannot spell because they are too busy shortening words. Is it because they don't have time to write dear husband, or dear daughter or is it just laziness.

Oh please someone tell me what FOTTFSOFATFOSM means! I won't sleep tonight if I don't find out. I've tried looking it up but haven't found it yet...sad

... and Parsley3

Just paste the acronym into Google, or whichever... it'll come up!

Wow - I had to Google twice because my first search results were for a number of Chiropody clinics near Stockholm, such as Fokuspåfoten

GG, I do agree with part of what you say, I don’t put a d in front of anyone, it’s either daughter or d for example When I first used this site, I was unsure what everyone was talking about, soon learned of course but I don’t like using dear or darling , if it really irritates, you just don’t read the posts or reply. I am frequently shocked at the poor spelling of many young people. They can message quicker than you can say anything, they understand each other and to them that’s what matters. I used to correct poor spelling and in return got a smiling emoji.

This thread is very funny, although I don't think it was the Original Poster's intention!

Whenever I see this thread title I think that if acronyms were all I had to worry about, I'd be rather fond of them.

Witz, that one is wicked but I like it. So totally over the top that it actually loses its venom 😂😂

AskAlice Sat 30-Dec-23 09:47:55

Thank you MerylStreep - all is clear now! grin

Bella23 Fri 29-Dec-23 23:08:04

Thank you for explaining that Monica.
I was told to do the same in Scientific papers . In my case, all references had to be numbered and then listed at the end of the paper. It would be not very easy to do it on Gransnet and not meet the Site criteria.
Anyone can ask questions, tell us what they think or generally chat. it is a breath of fresh air to be able to express yourself as you want not as a text to be marked with a red pencil when submitted or in the case of gransnet shown to a wide public. Everyone's thoughts and ideas count, and we are all grateful to read others' opinions.wineCheers

This thread is discussing acronyms on GN.

Problems with grammar and syntax in a more general way are something entirely different.

The range of acronyms used on GN is in a list clearly indicated at the beginning and end of every thread. 31 in all, several of which are rarely if ever used, and many are so similar that their meaning is self-evident.

The world is full of acronyms. After writing this post I may well watch a DVD or listen to a CD

As for When at University/training it was always drummed into us that you do not use acronyms (or at the very least you must in the first instance write the full text with the acronym in brackets after) - permissible then to use the acronym in the same body of text.

Yes, I am doing this in a piece of course work at the moment, but the conventions governing an academic document are not those governing ondinary every day communication and are needed to meet the very specific needs of an academic environment.

In academic documents, every bit of information must be followed by a reference to the source of the information and while, yes, we do sometimes post links to help someone or prove something, our posts if we had to meet academic referencing expectations would be burdensome in the extreme and would effectively kill GN.

As they say, horses for courses.

I wonder if GG (neither Georgesgran, nor GrannyGravy) uses etc. and e.g. or the full phrase, i.e. (id est) et cetera and exempli gratia.

Just wondering? They were in common use, long before social media became part of everyday life.

My Good morning post shall henceforth follow this pattern
Good morning all it is quite mild here, about 10 degrees Celsius also known as 50 degrees Fahrenheit and I have been awake since 5 ante meridiem despite not getting to bed until 11.30 post meridiem. Today is my dear sister’s birthday- she is 2 years older than me being born in 1946 in the year of our Lord whereas I was born in 1948 also in the year of our Lord. I have an appointment at 11 ante meridiem with my National Health Service General Practitioner as I suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well as needing my influenza vaccination
(Anybody still awake?)

Bella23 Fri 29-Dec-23 17:51:47

Thanks for the translation MerylStreep I could not google it. That's a new one for me.smile
My younger DD when a teenager came home from school one day ,when I was talking to my mother on the phone. DD was drenched and I told her she was making dirty footprints on the carpet. She was in a real mood with herself and shouted at me "I don't give a Flying F." My mother hearing it only muffled on the phone said "Where's she flying to?" I replied she's grounded and my mother replied "Well at least she's safely down".
We both still laugh about it and DD has never used language to me like that again.

I can't remember what it all 'says', but the 'FO' is 'please go away' and the ...ATFOSM is 'and then go away some more'' grin

Ooooooh, very naughty... 😱

nanaK54 Fri 29-Dec-23 17:44:19
