Some of the swearing on Mumsnet has even come as a surprise to me and I worked on a chatline with some etremely robust language.

Perhaps we could have an abbreviation starting with ‘F’, to avoid doubt?

I think it originated on MN so the second word is probably Head.

We can take it to mean whatever we want to.

I don't assume what the D stands for until I have read the context. It could be Deaf or Demanding or Drunken as well as Dear, Darling, Damned or Dratted - all possible descriptions of our OHs (Other Halves)

I hate the abbreviations which start with ‘D’. Who, in normal conversation, describes their husband/child/grandchild/sibling/friend/whatever as ‘dear’ or ‘darling’? I also hate ‘fed up of’, as in the thread title.

That's right. An acronym should make another pronounceable word, so in fact BBC, NHS etc are not acronyms but NATO and UNICEF are.

I can't add much. Mamie has already addressed the 🐘 elephant in the room: that the thread title is hardly correct grammar.

I trained as a typist and prefer to type out the whole word., but I have discovered a capslock button on my tablet now and can happily write DH, BTW, and so on without great strain (we are no longer using manual typewriters, after all)

I'm not bothered by acronyms I know they are widely used on this site, I don't bother with the prefaced, initial "d" whether it means dear or darling I've no idea, but I don't use it, each to their own. I was perplexed over on MN reading through one thread where the OP kept referring to her "LO" couldn't for the life of me work out what or indeed who that was until I tumbled "Little One" seemed a bit twee to me, why not baby, toddler, child, son or daughter, but hey ho we're all different. I think it's up to the individual how they wish to post or refer to members of their family.

In my view its a case of some do and some don't. Its simply an abbreviation that is used on here.

Those who dislike can spell it out and those who like can abbreviate... 😃

I have read GrannyGrunter's comments on other threads and they are certainly robust so I suspect they are always likely to inspire some pushback!

Witzend I’ve just seen you ‘invent’ another abbreviation on a different thread - DSUI - do something useful instead!
I think that’s a great one to add to the list.
My favourite for any jobs around the house that are beyond me is GAMI - get a man in!

MaizieD, I sometimes think that some people use forums largely because they enjoy being shirty - in a safe, anonymous way - to other people.

This thread has caused quite a lot of amusement but really it should have been in the pedants corner. GrannyGrunter has not come back so I hope she has not been put off GN (oops!) which would be a shame. I do remember some years ago a poster saying they used speech to text software to post and apologising for any mistakes. I dislike the use of D whatever and do not use but have now learnt to skim over that part of any posting, each to their own.

TBF, as MerylStreep gave a link to the meaning a couple of days ago, I’m tempted to write RTFT (not really, I just wanted to put in more abbreviations. Especially a sweary one).

When I followed Meryl's link this morning it led me to a twitter thread and this current discussion. Not everyone is on twitter and you can no longer read it without being registered. Even then, I had to follow the twitter thread to find it. It wasn't immediately obvious.

And we know that not everyone reads the thread before responding...

I believe what irritated (some of us) was the presumption that the use of this mechanism denoted laziness... and could even be the cause of illiteracy. There are some very well educated and literate grans on this site!

Although I'm used to acronyms on other SM sites, I did at first find those on here somewhat puzzling; but the glossary below was helpful - and its very existence indicates that they are a well-established code that one is, ahem, basically expected to understand and acknowledge as 'legitimate'.

I know that not every husband is a dear darling but I assume the acronyms are not meant to be taken literally .

Also typing mistakes or spelling mistakes.
Don't blame Dyslexia for poor reading, it affects different people in different ways.
Most cannot spell but some myself included taught themselves to read before going to school my daughter on the other hand is a much slower reader than I am. Do not imply it is a lack of intelligence, I think my DD who has a B. A and a B.S.c and Institute qualifications would have something to say to you.
