Edinburgh day trip

A propos not really of anything at all, the tale is told of an elderly shepherd living up the Ettrick valley when my Dad was a lad who had apparently had never been as far as Edinburgh (about 30 miles away).
One day he took his courage in both hands and caught the train from Selkiek to Edinburgh Waverley for a day trip.
On his return he was asked what he thought of his capital city
"Oh its grand" he enthused, "and awfy busy. But d'ye ken," he continued, "there's a great big roof over the while place so ye dinnae get wet if it's raining"

Proper butcher's haggis is great. Have it with bashed neeps and champit tatties.

A search under Edinburgh for day visits might give you a few ideas.

If you’re NT members or not, the Georgian House in Charlotte Square and Gladstone Land on the Royal Mile are worth a visit.
There’s Holyrood House and The National Gallery also good.

We frequently have haggis and tend to stock up whenever we're north of the border. The genuine article is much better than the ones you get in the supermarket.

I second the National Gallery. I'd also recommend Mary King's Close (book in advance). We took our GD but I think it's interesting for adults as the tour tells you so much about the history of Edinburgh.

Due to the low light, Turner's watercolours are only on show to the public at the National Gallery of Scotland in January. They are magnificent.
Edinburgh is just great so as Baggs says look at what's on.

It depends on your interests but my NZ cousins were thrilled by the Sheep Heid, an ancient inn/restaurant in Duddingston Village. (a brisk walk from Holyrood house through the park) You can play 10 pin bowling the old fashioned way.

Get the City Tour bus and just jump on and off depending what you fancy.

We enjoyed lunch earlier this month, at The Haggis Box, Scottish Storytelling Centre, Royal Mile. They do soup, sandwiches etc as well as haggis. Lovely staff.

National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery if you’re into art. The Camera Obscura- fascinating. The steps off the North Bridge - made of different kinds of marble. The Mosque Kitchen for a cheap but excellent curry lunch. Go for a ride on a tram. Excellent Lothian buses. The Botanic Gardens.

I’m a native Glaswegian and still find good things in Edinburgh! Have fun!!
