New Year Traditions

When I first got married over 50years go now at New Year time I always made sure everything in the house and outside (paths, front door etc.) were given a good old clean, new sheets on bed, empty washing basket, the list can go on. I enjoyed doing it and was proud to do it and I felt very comfortable with that tradition. However whilst I still like a 'clean and tidy house' for the New Year coming in I have to say I find it all a bit exhausting now and don't do it with gusto anymore. In fact have cut down a lot. Does anyone else have traditions they liked doing but no longer do?

I used to do exactly what you did but I can no longer do it. About all I can manage is the washing and bed changing. I am not sure if it is a Scottish tradition or if my mother was obsessed with cleanliness.

I do sort out the airing cupboard for reasons beyond me it’s a habit half of which is now in bags for charity. I like an empty wash basket clean bedding and clean flooring that’s it for now.

Definately, a tradition that is more important in Scotland than in England, but it exists in the south and west of Denmark too.

I cleaned house on the 29th, did the washing and ironing yesterday, had already sorted the year's accounts out and laid them aside for filing in the coming week, made out the new household budget spread-sheet and backed my computer up to an external hard drive.

Haven't reached the stage yet of cutting back on this preparations, but I do now spread them over more days, and as the house had been thoroughly cleaned before Christmas, as every year, there wasn't all that much to do.
