Anyone just watched Mr Bates v the Post Office? *GNHQ tweaked the title*

So sad watching this. My lovely local Post Office closed down because of it. It was owned by a lovely family and their son was accused of theft as he was the postmaster. He went to prison for 18 months. His mum told customers it was the new Horizon system but rumours spread that he was a thief. Nobody would use their little corner shop anymore and people were racist against them as they were an Asian family. He was the nicest, most efficient postmaster and was super fast with serving you. So very sad they lost their home and business.

If all this money was lost, I know some was paid back out of personal savings even so where is the rest of the money? It can’t be a small sum surely and it’s got to show up somewhere.

The money/losses didn't exist.

So where did the money paid in by desperate sub postmasters go to?

It is horrifying. Everything about it.

The lost money and the culprits seem to have got off scot free - how can this be?

3/1/24 A step in the right direction, but nowhere near enough Those poor people.
‘The Postal Services Minister Kevin Hollinrake has called for the former chief of the Post Office Paula Vennells to hand back her CBE as he backs prosecutions over the Horizon IT scandal.

Hundreds of subpostmasters were wrongly accused and even convicted of fraud and other financial crimes they did not commit due to an IT error relating to the Fujitsu system.

Paula Vennells, who is featured in ITV's new drama Mr Bates V The Post Office, was CEO of the post office from 2012 until 2019, at the time the company was pushing prosecutions through the courts.’
She was also an ordained priest. How can she sleep at night?

It makes me so angry and I am
Not even involved. The unfairness, the dishonesty, they should be ashamed of themselves. Sadly they don’t give a s..t they just want to cover themselves.

A well done drama isn’t it? Knowing the events are true makes it so poignant, those poor people, what they had to go through.

JaneJudge Wed 03-Jan-24 18:28:16

I didn't know anything about it but my goodness it is truly shocking. Those poor people

Absolutely disgraceful. The PO managers responsible should face criminal prosecution. The selling off of public utilities by the Tories has led to profit and saving market face being the gods rather than service to the public. The PO and Royal Mail should be nationalised.

It is a fine dramatisation on itv, but the scandal has been public knowledge for some time. Why has no minister responsible for the post office, or any prime minister (we've had enough of them), had the guts to instruct the Post Office to look at the average compensation paid so far, and pay that amount immediately to all those still seeking compensation, leaving it open for them to claim more if they feel it justified? Why has there been no general overturning of convictions, since the PO and its legal representatives were misleading the courts in every case?

Heartbreaking to watch... I'm also concerned, especially after tonight's episode, that Fujitsu supplied a key govt dept I worked in with its computer system.....

Heartbreaking how ordinary people have no power. I can relate personally.

I’ve signed the petition but is anyone else having problems trying to share it to Facebook? I keep getting an error message.

A forensic accountant experienced in cyber crime would surely have been able to establish that this missing money never existed in reality if given access to the systems.

However, that would have required the co-operation of Fujitsu and of senior managers in the Post Office who were determined that neither the computer system nor they themselves were to blame in any way.

eazybee Tue 02-Jan-24 22:54:33

Paula Vennells needs to be prosecuted.

Where is all the money coming from to pay compensation to all the people they have wronged?

I think this will finish the Post Office.

MerylStreep Tue 02-Jan-24 22:49:02

Deedaa
I’m afraid you give the police too much credence. These are the same people who believed Carl Beech when he named several decent innocent high profile men of belonging to a paedeophile ring. Never once did they look at his personal computer which would have shown what a disgusting low life he is.
The Post Office lawyers would have run rings round them. They are woefully lacking in tech skills.
