Who's still Good Looking with Age

Just watched a Queen concert from 1986 and note how good looking Brian May is even now. Always thought Sean Connery has aged well too.
Michael Douglas was good looking when younger but looks a bit scary now. His dad Kirk was handsome when younger but really went weird looking when he was old.
Who do you think has aged well?

That must have been very difficult but you’re certainly reaping the benefits of avoiding the sun now, you have excellent skin. Once again thank you for your gracious reply.

Fillers etc not an option for me, due to previous anaphylactic shock issues but, if they float your boat… do it!!

AuntieEleanorsCat Tue 09-Jan-24 17:41:04

GSM… oh, no offence taken. I feel very lucky to be here still (all things considered) and I’m not against fillers/Botox or anything else people want to try in their own way to keep going 😂
As a kid who grew up in the 60’s/70’s I was envious of friends who tanned well and always looked “healthy”. I had dreadful allergies. Had to carry an Epipen with me at all times and the sun, was right out. Now, 45/50 yrs later, I’m getting fine lines but no sun damage, as such.
Swings and roundabouts! 😊

Now that I can’t agree with! He always looks so miserable and grizzled!

AuntieEleanorsCat Tue 09-Jan-24 17:34:49

Oh Lord yes!! Harrison Ford still has it 😊

I guess women have the advantage over men in that there is a much greater range of hairstyles available to them, they are perhaps less likely to lose their hair and colouring it is far more acceptable than it is for men. Also of course we have the benefits of makeup and we tend to look after our skin far better. We are also more likely to take an interest in clothes and finding styles and colours which flatter.

Apologies AEC for thinking you’d had fillers and misunderstanding your point. Thank you for your very gracious reply which was wholly undeserved.

I saw a photo of Dr Hilary Jones in the Sunday Times - now there’s a man who looks good and clearly takes care of himself. Mind you, there’s a fine line between a man who takes care of himself and is ageing well and one who is vain (I’m not suggesting HJ is in the latter camp but I expect many of us have known such men).

Harrison Ford, I find him attractive and interesting and has a good sense of humour, a must.

Allsorts Tue 09-Jan-24 06:22:52

Just look the best you can for your age. I don't colour my hair, do like to dress well and know I look good for my age but no one would mistake me for being 20years younger, I am good enough, I’m not high maintenance.. I notice if someone takes care of their appearance but their attitude to life is what I find attractive and interesting. I do notice as I travel about a number of older people are very negative and enjoy a moan. I avoid them.

AuntieEleanorsCat Tue 09-Jan-24 05:50:48

MOnica I agree. I guess it’s not a case of ageing “well” or not, really. The way you look/behave is irrelevant in that, you ARE the age you are and we’re all only heading one way 🤣 For me, having serious health issues is what will age me physically so, what I look like facially is by the be. The meds I take for an hereditary illness, floor me, from time to time and then I’m just happy to be here at all, whether I look my age or 100! We’re all just doing the very best we can in life, I guess.

AuntieEleanorsCat Tue 09-Jan-24 05:28:07

GSM… no. I do get a gob full of cold sores from time to time. Usually, when I’m a bit run down. My considerably younger point was in relation to the opposite sex. As I say, I know lots of lovely ladies who look fab for their age (I’m sure you’re one of them); the gentlemen, not so much. Not facially aged, per se but a lack of overall fitness. Too much good living/too many business dinners and bar propping.

AuntieEleanorsCat Tue 09-Jan-24 05:20:16

Wow, yes!! Paul Jones was amazing on Jools. Unbelievable really, for that age. It must be genetic (a good deal of it). And, it’s important to “move”. I do heart pumping exercise every day, whether I want to or not! I feel a bit miserable if I can’t do it and when away visiting friends recently, there was a good deal of sitting about and I found that really hard.

This is the problem AEC. the range of looks that go with any age are so various that while you are certainly aging well, when people say that you look young for your age it is because they have a stereotype in their mind about what someone of any given age should look like and if you do not meet that stereotype then they say they look younger, or think they look older.

I wuld say that you are comfortably in the range of looks for someone your age, but in the group that can be said to be ageing well. Similarly if a lady with white hair and a finely lined face said she was the same age, it would ot surprise me, I wuld see them as someone who has not aged that well facially)

Except that in reality the range of looks at any age is so wide that there cannot be any stereotypes

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 08-Jan-24 22:13:19

How can I say this kindly? I don’t think you look younger than you are, let alone ‘considerably’ younger. I am almost 73 and there’s not a lot of difference between us except that I no longer colour my long hair and I don’t have work done - have you perhaps had lip fillers?

Nandalot Mon 08-Jan-24 22:04:44

Annma, I agree about Paul Jones on Jools Holland. I had to look up his age. He will be 82 in February and still managed to stand on one leg at the end of Pretty Flamingo.

I think I know a number of women who’ve aged well, from a real life perspective but, not many men! Sadly, I had no choice but to divorce my husband in 2022. I didn’t want to and I miss him but, it was inevitable as he left me no choice. I am now venturing into the idea of dating. I’m only 61 and honestly, don’t relish the idea of life alone, for the rest of my days but… I look considerably younger than I am. That’s not boasting. I had to produce ID for my eye test and occasionally, when I pick up a prescription. It’s flattering but, the men of 62+ are old. They’ve just not looked after themselves, possibly? My own ex husband aged very quickly after 60. Didn’t bother me. I still found him very attractive but, it was noticeable.

Celebrity wise, I think Meryl Streep is still beautiful and “untouched” surgically. Kristen Scott Thomas, too. The men? Hugh Grant still dashing with a twinkle in his eye. Charles Dance.

Photos. Second one, this evening. Don’t like to smile much at the moment but, you get the gist.

I am not bothered about feeling superior, but I felt, firstly I was dealing with someone bound by stereotypes, and, what is more, someone who was rude enough to comment on it, as if it was my fault I did not conform to her stereotype of what I should sound like.

Ouch

MOnica I sympathise about someone on the phone, as I was very annoyed with a "young person" who changed her voice and way of speaking to me as soon as she knew my age group. I comfort myself by believing that I am more intelligent and better educated and a successful business woman rather than a mere call centre employee.
It is all in the mind. If you feel superior you will be !!!

I saw Helen Mirren a couple of years ago in a lounge at T5 Heathrow (she sat next to my DH who had no idea who she was but clocked her amazing sandals - as did I ) and I thought she looked absolutely stunning. Her hair was beautiful, she is taller than I expected and generally looked classy and expensive but not overdone. She may have had work done but if so it is very subtle, she still looks like herself, unlike many others who have become unrecognisable.

Good for you Saggi. I too live in jeans, various different colours. 73 next month.

I dislike anything apart from jeans - blue and black.

I’m 9st 12lb….i usually wear jeans and one of my three leather jackets ( I like different coloured ones!) when people say ….arent you dressed too young (73) I get really angry . Can’t I dress the way that suits me ….do they want to see everyone over 60 in rladticatdd waisted skirts and thick tights and comfortable cardies and shoes!?
I have wrinkles and my hair is silver ….and I don’t give a damn what folk think . Oh and just to add insult to their obvious injury ….i don’t drive so do a lot of walking around with my Bluetooth ear-pods in listening to music ranging from the 50’s to the 20’s( that’s 2020’s)….i like what I like and so should you all….dont let people dictate to you ! If my grandkids (16 and 12) see me in town …they run to give me a hug ….if they’re not scared to be seen with me ….whst do I care about other folk!?
