Do you enjoy magazines?

I love settling down with a coffee and a magazine. Sadly, I can no longer kid myself that at almost £6 it is little treat. I've now taken to buying older copies of favourites (Cotswold Life, Homes and Gardens etc) from charity shops. Does anyone else need a magazine fix sometimes?

I don’t do mags …except one on subscription called ‘Free Inquiry’ . They send it every two months as I can’t buy over counter . I read one article per week as it has to last me. I do puzzles and crosswords and sudoku in book form …but no mags as such.

I have a subscription to The Lady, and it's worth every penny. It always has very interesting articles and regular features. I always look forward to it landing in my mail box each month

My mother used to buy Woman every week. Poor soul, she had no TV, radio or iPad.
I’ve never bought magazines but get given occasional Period Homes or similar. They’re all full of advertisements, of course.

Yes, absolutely love magazines and also subscribe to Readly at £9.99 a month and get access to literally thousands of magazines on line.
I read them on my Ipad, laptop or even my mobile phone.

I read several books each week (am a real bookworm!) and do enjoy magazines. I always look out for the best subscription deals but this year I don't think I will bother subscribing to any. Good Housekeeping, which I used to love, has become very "samey" ( I am so fed up reading about all these fabulous high achieving women and they certainly don't resemble anyone I know) and Country Living just makes me feel a bit inferior as my country living really is mucky wellies, missing roof slates, damp, etc and not all like the glossy country lives it shows.

Have always loved magazines right from when I used to read the Bunty and the Mandy but think I may give reading them free online using my library membership - though there is a chance I may weaken and take out a subscription!

I love magazines, always have! Yes, the houses and clothes are too expensive, but we can dream...I guess I like to try to stay current with trends.

The type I buy are more home and style, no celebrity gossip. I have discovered a local bookshop brings in Woman and Home from UK, so I indulge in that as well. I find the book section really good.

The only magazines I ever enjoyed were football based. My Mum used to get Woman or Woman’s Own. Are they still around ?

Reader’s Digest is a great read, informative, educational and inspiring. Have had a yearly subscription for years and pass them on to friends.

Good Housekeeping. Woman and home. Show clothes so expensive. Eg. Skirt £395 blouse £275. Not too mention the cost of accessories to go with , ridiculous prices and the mags are now £6. There’s only so many times I want to read about celebs. Eg Joanna. Helen. Etc. I get Woman’s Weekly but even that had got thinner and less content lately

Harris27 Mon 08-Jan-24 14:49:22

Me too ginny same taste in magazines.

Harris27 Mon 08-Jan-24 14:47:23

I like the woman’s weekly and treat myself to a yearly subscription. I work I earn I treat myself. It usually drops through my letterbox on a Friday ideal for the weekend.

Fairycakes Mon 08-Jan-24 14:37:35

No, I haven't bought them for years. It's not just the cost but they are full of celebrity stories which don't interest me. I would like to buy comics for the grandchildren but they cost a King's ransom 😕

I access a whole range of magazines and newspapers through the PressReader app. I get this through my public library service and it does not cost me a penny.

Yes I love magazines and to save money I look out for reductions on subscriptions. They are advertised in newspapers and magazines and also social media and are really good value.
I have been subscribing to Vanity Fair on and off since 2012 and have kept most of them! We are hoping to move soon and I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them all! Any suggestions?

"Yours" used to be my favourite, I never buy magazines now. but will agree with you cupcake

Musicgirl Mon 08-Jan-24 13:46:13

@jaybee66, l had forgotten about She. I used to enjoy it, too, although I didn’t have it every month. For those who are mentioning magazines aimed at an older readership, I remember being in W H Smith some time ago and seeing the cover of People’s Friend, which had a free gift on it - a tube of Steradent! Not quite what posters had in mind, I’m sure. 😱

Heliotrope Mon 08-Jan-24 13:41:24

Sorry posted twice, post wasn’t that interesting to start with! Must get a grip with this posting lark

Heliotrope Mon 08-Jan-24 13:34:33

Years ago I used to read Woman and Woman’s own, but don’t bother with any magazines now. Picked up Hello magazine at the hairdressers and thought that I had entered a parallel universe as I didn’t recognise anyone or anything, when I came across a soap powder advert I was quite relieved.

Fernhillnana Mon 08-Jan-24 13:31:39

Ah I still miss Honey. But no, there’s nothing that interests me enough to fork out the £5+

Papyrus Mon 08-Jan-24 13:24:12

I might try the oldie. We get The Week and New Scientist and read them during weekend breakfast in bed lie ins. Bliss.

AmberSpyglass Mon 08-Jan-24 13:19:26

The adverts in luxury magazines are gorgeous - artwork whether or not it’s something I’d buy (or could afford!)

PinkCosmos

^If I'm doing a project (kitchen, bathroom, decorating etc.) I sometimes buy a couple of magazines to get ideas^

I use Pinterest for ideas these days. It's online and it's free. I have spend many an 'hour' going down a Pinterest wormhole.

Yes, that's true PinkCosmos, I can't remember the last time I did buy a magazine. My kitchen planner recommended Readily so I used that too. Also some designers use Houzz to show people the samples or ideas they've had for a project.

My dear friend passes on a magazine she has passed on to her from her Sis in Law, who is a retired doctor. Its The Lady, and while i would not consider buying it myself, it is a very good read. Lots of lovely articles regarding some old hollywood stars, lovely pages of where to buy unusual gifts, but the best thing is the adverts in the back of it. There are pages of people who need staff in very priviliged circumstances, stately homes, mansions in the middle of nowhere, people wanting a companion for an elderly parent and so it goes on. It is fascinating, not least because it puts you in mind of the truly wealthy people in this country, who can pay for virtually anything, and they do!!! Sadly I would be too old to apply for any of the posts on offer, the one advert, you have to be fluent in Mandarin and English, which counts me out!!!

Littleannie Mon 08-Jan-24 13:15:51

Why pay monthly for Readly, when you can get hundreds of magazines for free from your library on the Libby app?

jaybee66 Mon 08-Jan-24 13:14:06

SHE was my favourite magazine for years, it used to have lots of competitions which I used to enter. Since it finished I only read free magazines and am lucky to have several passed on to me by friends and neighbours and then I pass them on to someone else.
