Do you enjoy magazines?

I love settling down with a coffee and a magazine. Sadly, I can no longer kid myself that at almost £6 it is little treat. I've now taken to buying older copies of favourites (Cotswold Life, Homes and Gardens etc) from charity shops. Does anyone else need a magazine fix sometimes?

I don't buy any on a regular basis but thoroughly enjoyed The Radio Times at Christmas. I love a magazine about interiors but they tend to be very expensive.

No I gave up on magazines a long time ago they are (in my opinion) full of rubbish well the ones I used to read are
The homes and gardens type don’t interest me as I would never have anything that could be remotely comparable

No, hardly ever look at one.

Far too expensive for a load of adverts,

Grandmabatty The Christmas Radio Times is the one I get most excited about too. Love going through it circling all the goodies.

Only The World of cross stitching.. I have a subscription. As I am addicted to cross stitch. Don't read any other magazines. I read books.

Do you subscribe to Kindle unlimited? You can get a selection of magazines to down load for free with this subscription as well as any books on the kindle unlimited list also the TV magazines are included. It's not as good as having a paper version but needs must. The Kindle unlimited is £9.49 we month and both me and DH use it for our books and I have a selection of magazines,

Every time I buy one I am so disappointed in the amount of adverts and lack of content that I say never again, but eventually again I succumb.

MerylStreep Sat 06-Jan-24 16:48:42

It must be about 40 years since I last bought one.

I take quite a lot, there are those that come wih organisations I belong to and then as a serial house renovator I enjoy house and interior magazines. It doesn't matter whether I can afford the house or interiors shown. Colour schemes, decoration ideas and much more. can be picked up regardless of budget. I enjoy the magazines at each end of the range best - Home Decor, Style at Home etc and the old and antique property end: Period Home, Reclaim, English Home.

The ones that bore me are the middle range magazines: Ideal Home. House and Garden, House Beautiful

The only magazine I buy is the Puzzler. It keeps me occupied for many hours. It's £3.95 for around 170 puzzles so worth it for me.
Not interested in the glossies.

That sounds a very savvy saving 62Granny as I am a massive bookworm too! I've yet to venture into the techo that is Kindle, but nearly everyone who I've spoken to who has taken the leap has loved it. Even the doubters, so who knows?

TerriBull Sat 06-Jan-24 16:57:23

I haven't bought any for ages, I did once these days I regard them as a waste of money. We get three with our Sunday paper, the Style one often annoys me, stupid clothes with stupid price tags. Magazines can be accessed for free through BorrowBox at the library, not the same as the physical version but often, depending on what it is, not enough content to justify the price.

Urmstongran Sat 06-Jan-24 17:01:40

Nope. They are expensive drivel (in my humble). The only one I ‘skim’ read is the Saga Magazine. Only because my stepfather buys a subscription every year then passes it on to me! I read some of it - Jeremy Paxman & Jenny Murray for example - but I don’t have a garden so I skip those pages, I don’t have a pet so ditto, same as I don’t craft or bake! As you see, not much in them to interest me.
😁

But after I’ve read them I pass them to my neighbour here who loves every page - the puzzles, the articles with a monthly celebrity etc - then she passes them back. I saved them up and took them over to Málaga where my LWW friends were absolutely delighted with them. So much so, one lady said she wished she could subscribe to it but it’s not available outside of the UK.

As a member of our local library we can read newspapers and magazines for free through the press reader app. It’s a great saving and I read whatever takes my fancy,

I have had a Gardeners’ World subscription for many years, which OH gave me as a gift. We also have National Trust, The Garden and RSPB magazines, as we also subscribe to these organisations. I pass my gardening magazines on to friends and they do likewise.

I used to love magazines, and could chart my life from Woman's Mirror, Nova, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Woman and Home, Ideal Home, Country Homes and interiors, 25 Beautiful Homes plus a few others i have forgotten.
Now they are very expensive, very full of adverts, little written content and expensive, unrealistic designer clothes and furniture.
It used to be a treat. Very rarely buy one now.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 06-Jan-24 17:26:51

I love house magazines ( decor porn my children reckon) and often ask for a subscription as a gift. It's a calorie free treat...

Cabbie21 Sat 06-Jan-24 17:27:05

I get a free magazine with my bank account. I can choose from a wide range. Then I pass it on to my daughter who puts it in her holiday let. I have had Landscape but at her request I am changing to Country Living.

ginny Sat 06-Jan-24 17:29:36

I enjoy Women’s weekly, and have a subscription paid for by myself. A good mix of fiction, articles and puzzles. No kiss & tell rubbish.

I also enjoy ‘Prima’ same as above. One of my daughters buys me a subscription each year.

Once I have read them I pass them on to my MIL who then passes them on again.

Maggiemaybe Sat 06-Jan-24 17:41:55

I was going to say no, then someone mentioned the ones that come with the Saturday and Sunday papers, and someone else mentioned The Radio Times, and yes, I get all of those if they count. smile I skim read them, but there’s usually something I enjoy. I subscribe to two comping magazines too, just for the competitions. I pass them all on to a friend, who also passes them on, so they’re well read.

sodapop Sat 06-Jan-24 17:42:39

A friend & I share a subscription to W & H which we both enjoy, there are a lot of ads but good book reviews and articles as well. We pass the magazine on to two other friends when we have read it.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Jan-24 17:46:06

I couldn’t afford magazines when I was hard up so they were a great luxury when I was able to buy them. Woman’s Journal long since gone. Good Housekeeping seems to cater for younger women than me (but I get an online one free for recipes). Woman and Home also no longer a fit. Gardeners’ World became very repetitive - how many times do you need to be told how to sow seeds and prune roses? Country Living became boring with all the shabby chic. I read the Sunday Times magazine and their Culture supplement, otherwise it’s newspapers and books (mainly history).

Witzend Sat 06-Jan-24 17:46:34

I stopped buying them after counting the percentage of ads in one I used to like - it was something like 70%.

I still enjoy a flick through the likes of Country Living while waiting to see the dentist, though.

The only time I buy a magazine is when I’m flying and I pick one up at the airport . In my late teens and twenty’s I loved cosmopolitan.
One of the reasons I like going to a hairdressing salon is the magazine’s .
