I see threads as a conversation and sometimes the OP does dip in and out as you would if you had started a conversation.

However is it just me do others feel it’s a bit rude when the OP never comes back, particularly when they have asked for help?

I do think it is polite to check back and acknowledge any replies, but understand that some people only go on-line at certain times of day. So I wouldn't write them off until at least 24 hours after an original post.

Aveline

Thanks Bella23. Now I'm feeling left out sad

I've just found it again I had pushed it into archives. It was supposed to be a Gransnet Newsletter dated 31.12 2023.
I've never had one before or since. Please don't feel left out I'm beginning to think it is a scam and someone has my proper e-mail address with my name. If no one else has received it, it is quite worrying. I think I'll put it on ask a gran. What do you think?

It's the ones who put up a post and attempt to dictate what kind of response they should get. Sorry, but that's not how internet forums work. Then they get all 'offended' when the thread takes a different turn or they get replies which don't suit them.

I think I agree here.
Why put up an opening post when you already know the answer you want to hear?

But,if a poster does not come back,
will YOUR world be altered in any way?
If a poster does not come,so be it.
It does not worry me in the slightest.

MY world is good, thanks.

There's a thread running on GN where I counted 15 questions from posters on page 1. (Me sitting in a boring airport). Now three days later, and on page 4, that figure must be approaching 50 or more. Still no answers, which leaves people to suggest the OP is having a laugh or can't be bothered.

Yes

Obviously minutely, but yes.
Rudeness in my opinion. [though there may be genuine reasons in some cases].
And I agree about waiting at least a day.

People mention politeness. I agree.
Maybe others are getting used to others not being polite. I am not in that position yet. And I dont want to be either.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 16-Jan-24 08:07:43

I think after 24 hours the OP should at least come back and say thanks for reading and goodbye if they have had enough of the answers.
It would be helpful to all if we knew what happened in the end, or what worked.

But at least all the helpful replies help others in a similar situation or are food for thought.
Do we have a figuee for the number of people on Grànsnet? To recognise more than 20 or so names would be extremely clever! There will always be "new" names popping up even though they have been on GN for many years.

I'm sorry if I have been guilty of this - I will check - my brain does not always function as it should but today is a good day smile

I’ve just got my copy of the roundup Bella and I don’t think it’s a scam.

Juliet27 Tue 16-Jan-24 08:18:23

I guess we have to give our e mail details when we join Bella so I suppose that’s why they sent it to our e mail addresses.

Grammaretto Tue 16-Jan-24 08:22:42

True that some posters never get back to thank but don't you think that the replies are often very interesting in themselves and helpful?
I've learned much since discovering GN and mostly from other people's threads.
My own tend to be mundane but important or technical. No knicker stories 😂

Juliet27 Tue 16-Jan-24 08:25:26

Aveline Look at your e mails for 31/12/23 as that’s where the GN news round was sent to me.

Aveline Tue 16-Jan-24 08:32:44

I have done. No luck though.

nanna8 Tue 16-Jan-24 08:39:50

If you don’t ask for their newsletter they won’t send it. I didn’t ask for it because I don’t want it, so I don’t get it. I would be annoyed if I got something like that unsolicited so good on them for respecting my wishes.

Juliet27 Tue 16-Jan-24 08:53:07

Ah yes Nanna I’ve just noticed I was sent the roundup because I’d subscribed to their newsletter - apparently!

Interesting/informative though they may be, I cannot be bothered to read long diatribes unless the topic REALLY interests me and even then I often give up.

I can never be bothered to read any very long ones with no paragraphs.

Juliet27 Tue 16-Jan-24 09:22:33

If it’s a long winded new entry I often check the name in the search to see if they’ve ever posted before. I did respond to the Edward from LA foodie one as I thought it could have some interesting responses but he’s vanished off the scene as many do.

polomint Tue 16-Jan-24 13:17:44

I tried the search button juliet27 but it came up saying no results. I'm quite new so I didn't know you could search for a particular person to see in what threads she has commented. However, I tried and it didn't work

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Jan-24 13:19:58

You can search on google for ‘[username] gransnet’. The search function here is useless.

polomint Wed 17-Jan-24 13:06:28

Thank you

Farzanah Wed 17-Jan-24 13:10:43

I’ve noticed that often google searches prominently show new posts, with poster’s username too, especially about topical subjects.

NannyJan53 Wed 17-Jan-24 13:32:49

Bella23 I received that newsletter

Newatthis Wed 17-Jan-24 15:11:03

I posted something recently about an overbearing ‘friend’ but now can’t find it to see comments or to respond. I’ve looked in ‘I’m on’ but it’s not there.

It's on 'ask a gran'

OldFrill Wed 17-Jan-24 15:31:51

I think it's really rude when folk post asking for the OP to return, or doubting the validity of the post if they don't return (mind you there are some very rude folk on here). Who knows what the OP is dealing with (in one case a family death). Comments like that are extremely rude, accusatory, and just clog up the thread.
