When the OP never responds😬.

I see threads as a conversation and sometimes the OP does dip in and out as you would if you had started a conversation.

However is it just me do others feel it’s a bit rude when the OP never comes back, particularly when they have asked for help?

Then there are the occasions when the OP does respond, thanks people, says what she is going to do, and this is followed by numerous suggestions still coming in, even though her original query has been sorted.

IMO it’s usually when the OP has asked for advice, but the advice she’s given is not what she wants to hear.

Grannybags Wed 10-Jan-24 19:57:56

I agree with you all. It is annoying

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 10-Jan-24 20:06:35

I agree. There are also the threads started by trolls …

Georgesgran Wed 10-Jan-24 20:14:57

There seems to have been a few, very long-winded opening posts recently from new names (well, unknown to me).
Some get lots of replies and make no response, while others seem to argue the toss at every suggestion.
I suppose being annoyed/frustrated by the lack of response, is just the nature of the beast?

If an opening post is by a name I dont recognise[I still dont recognise all regular names], I hesitate a bit to reply. As I also find it annoying if someone runs away after bothering to start a thread, and then doesnt come back again.

Drives me crazy!
I sometimes deliberately start having a dialogue with myself that takes the thread off topic, (in a lighthearted way), but srill the OP doesn't come back!
I don't think they're genuine.

Joseann Wed 10-Jan-24 20:41:47

* still

We are obviously in a minority!
I had expected a more robust response.

Some ā€œnewā€ posters post long involved initial threads and don’t come back to acknowledge any replies, and are subsequently never heard of again.
I don’t take these threads seriously. It wastes the time of Gransnetters who are genuinely trying to help.

I always try to come back when I have posted. My last was just before Christmas and I said my day before knickers had fallen out of my cords leg in the Supermarket.
I got lots of other people telling their tales then came back and told how my knicker elastic had snapped in Chatsworth house and my aunt calmly put them in her handbag.
I got a mention in the Gransnet Round up of 2023 as did the others who told their tales and people like Kitty Lester who has other skills. No one has ever referred to that. Did only the people who were mentioned in it get the Newsletter?
It is only manners if you post to come back and keep the dialogue going, sum it up or at least say thank you.
If we are not careful it is turning into Moansnet not what it was when I joined a few years ago. We are not displaying the good manners we are always complaining about in younger people.

I also am wary of long-winded posts from posters whose names are not familiar to me especially if they do not return and I wonder if people are paid to invent a complicated family dilemma. I apologise if I am doing anyone an injustice.

Ziplok Thu 11-Jan-24 11:07:37

I think it is the polite thing to do to come back and acknowledge any comments from OP.
I don’t start many threads at all, but when I have done, I do try to respond to the replies.
I agree, recently there have been some very long posts from new posters who don’t come back, either to their thread or to join in any others. I have to say, they are the ones I am most dubious about.

ginny Thu 11-Jan-24 11:09:42

I find it annoying too. At least the OP could say thanks for the responses.

It’s like people who give an email address or join a WhatsApp group but never bother to look at them. Especially the ones who then say ā€œ oh I didn’t know about thatā€

Bella23 Thu 11-Jan-24 11:13:04

I think you are right Greenfinch. I have my doubts about the long-winded ones as well.
Do people do it for a laugh? Is it a release to put it in writing or do some people not like the answers they are being given, if they were me I would defend my case. I also wonder if some company or magazine/newspaper is paying them to get elderly ladies as they think of us, ideas.

nanna8 Thu 11-Jan-24 11:14:58

At this time of year many are away from home and sometimes there is no internet, especially in remote areas. That’s where I live anyway. All sorts of reasons people may not return, illness, family crises etc. I agree about the long winded weird posts, though - I often think it is bored kids looking for a laugh which is a shame when they are actually genuine.

Aveline Thu 11-Jan-24 11:16:43

What is the Gransnet round up?

biglouis Thu 11-Jan-24 11:17:08

I can understand why OP does not come back when someone de-contextualises one word or phrase they take offence to and trolls it, rather than replying to the actual argument being made. This is poor posting practice and all too common on forums such as this. Still, you dont need intelligence to post on a forum, just an internet connection.

Bella23 Thu 11-Jan-24 14:06:08

Aveline

What is the Gransnet round up?

It was a post I got from Gransnet team, a week gone Saturday. They talked about the posts they had laughed at like mine and the other person I remember being mentioned was Kitty I think for being rational. I just wondered why it had not been mentioned.
Not that I am blowing my own trumpet by dropping my Knickers but quite a few people were named and I can't remember getting one last year. Now I have gone off-piste from the original post.hmm

Aveline Thu 11-Jan-24 18:02:39

Thanks Bella23. Now I'm feeling left out sad

Grannybags Thu 11-Jan-24 18:11:22

Aveline

Thanks Bella23. Now I'm feeling left out sad

Me too!

Kim19 Thu 11-Jan-24 18:16:34

Interesting/informative though they may be, I cannot be bothered to read long diatribes unless the topic REALLY interests me and even then I often give up.

MissInterpreted Thu 11-Jan-24 18:22:37

It's the ones who put up a post and attempt to dictate what kind of response they should get. Sorry, but that's not how internet forums work. Then they get all 'offended' when the thread takes a different turn or they get replies which don't suit them.

polomint Thu 11-Jan-24 18:23:16

I'm a newbie and I have started a few threads and I think it is manners to acknowledge the replies. I have noticed on some threads there are a few not very nice comments but that's life I suppose
