Aveline, your post takes me back many years to when, as a shy young adult, I was way out of my depth at a social gathering organized by my future inlaws. One of the guests sounds so like the man you describe. He was at fne same table, and went to such great lengths to have me feel comfortable. He is now a very elderly gentlemen, but still a true gentleman in the nicest possible meaning of that word. I will never forget his kindness on that particular occasion, and have never heard anyone say a bad word about him. If only they were more like that. ☺

There often seems to be threads on GN about loud, bossy or rude people that we meet. However, last night I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting a lovely older man who had wonderful communication skills. He was obviously of the age when people were expected to converse socially with the person next to them but he did this with such charm and pleasance that it was a delight to meet him. DH was on his other side at dinner and felt exactly the same as me. Some people just 'have it' and this dear little man certainly did. I don't mean to sound patronising btw. He was a little smily chap and a pleasure to look at as well as listen to.
