Fibbing by omission

Do you ever just let someone believe something is happening even though it isn't?

This is just a fun thread so let's play nice.

DH thinks I use a new teabag each time I make him a cup of tea. He drinks really weak tea so the teabag barely touches the water. I use the same tea bag 3 times as long as it's not been too long since it was last used. DH would be horrified if he realised.

When DD1 was 4, I made the mistake of buying her a crying doll for Christmas. By lunch time on Christmas Day it was driving me insane so I flipped the batteries the wrong way. She saw the batteries were still in and accepted my explanation that they must have run out of power because her baby had cried so much.

As for tea - it has to be Yorkshire!
Don't think I wouldn't know the difference. 😁

The same son as my last story was a bit of a fussy eater as a child he wouldn’t eat cream because it ‘made his bum itch’

GSM no offence meant.
Husband was the fee earner and the pressure that some solicitors and barristers tried was ‼️
On one occasion when a barrister wanted me to change the report as husband was away which I had no intention of doing
I asked would you like me to sign it I do a good forgery. Oh yes please came the reply as I need it tomorrow
What can be said ❓❓

No offence taken!
As to the barrister - blimey!!!

Gwyllt Tue 23-Jan-24 17:33:23

I'd been married for 5 years before I owned up to my husband that my home made pasta sauce, which he loved, contained garlic.

V3ra

tanith we were at my sister-in-law's years ago and I said dinner smells nice, what are we having?
Beef bourguinon, she replied, but if dad asks it's stew.
He wouldn't eat anything "foreign" 🙄

welbeck when my husband was little they had an ice cream van that came round the streets and also a wet-fish van. They both had the same chimes and mother-in-law always said it was the fish van.
My husband grew up wondering why people wanted to buy fish twice a day 🤔

keepcalmandcavachon I'm on your side with the chocolate fingers 🤫😋😅

Your sil's beef bourguinon story reminds me of the time when we had all the family round for an 'easy' meal.
I had made a big pan of of chilli and one of chicken korma, but knowing that my mum would refuse to even try a 'curry' (the korma), I presented it as a 'creamy chicken casserole'.
You won't be surprised to hear that she happily tried it and even had a second helping. She still won't eat korma though! grin

I always tell my husband that my lemon cheesecake which he loves is lemon cream pie. He can’t stand cheesecake.

V3ra Tue 23-Jan-24 18:45:03

Or what my Mum used to call 'a white lie' which was a fib but to spare someone's feelings.

Sometimes it's a case of the end justifying the means.
My youngest would eat any meat as long as he thought it was lamb, so that's what we told him it was 🤷

NotSpaghetti Tue 23-Jan-24 18:48:56

It's interesting how many of these are about foods/drinks.

Floradora9 Tue 23-Jan-24 21:48:22

I used to make my own fruit yoghurt with raspberries and natural yogurt. One aunt who always said she hated yoghurt always loved it .

Auntieflo Tue 23-Jan-24 22:54:18

As a young hard up mum, I served casseroled heart once to DH and when he asked what it was, I just said 'meat'

As a former teacher I had to be very creative with language when writing school reports.

dragonfly46 Wed 24-Jan-24 07:34:44

I always say I’m fine when people ask especially my DH as he worries.

chloe1984 Wed 24-Jan-24 07:43:48

My children used to have tinned eagle sandwiches when younger as they didn’t like spam!

Ashcombe Wed 24-Jan-24 07:52:07

Cabbie21: I can identify with that!

I don't lie simple fact I forgot so I repeat myself.and don't even realise I have already said it. It's not dementia but is part of my HPX which effects my mobility.

But when my dad died his face was frozen in pain . He died in bed next to my mom while she slept so told her all dead people look like that . My dad was the 3rd death I had seen. Also she never knew his bladder released. I hated lying but my brother back me up. But it has never sat right in my mind. But I know my mom couldn't have coped with the truth. And I did it because of love.

Sparklefizz Wed 24-Jan-24 11:40:02

You were being kind Whiff.

Gwyllt Wed 24-Jan-24 11:55:43

All you very honest grans
Take the following situation
You have met someone new to the area on several occasions whilst walking the dog
You seem to get on very well
She asks you to join her for supper as it is her birthday but warns you she is not a very good cook
The welcome was warm but the food was really bad
Would you tell her the truth ❓❓❓

PinkCosmos Wed 24-Jan-24 12:05:38

I have been guilty of substituting expensive brands with cheaper ones e.g. tea bags, coffee, tomato sauce and brown sauce. The first two just go in the tea/coffee caddy. The last two I decant into the expensive bottle.

When my children were young they found an injured bird. We put it in a cardboard box, gave it water etc. It died later that night when the children were in bed. I told them the next day that it had recovered and flown away.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-Jan-24 12:19:24

No, I could not tell anyone who cooked for me that their cooking was bad. There would be some element I could pick out as ‘very interesting’ I’m sure, or I could say it was very satisfying (as in warm and filling) or ask for the recipe.

bikergran Thu 25-Jan-24 05:17:18

When the van used to come round my mum used to say Mr Whippy ice cream gave you spots!

I realised many many years later it was probably because she had no money for me an ice cream.

mousemac Thu 25-Jan-24 11:13:06

My mother was a manipulator. She'd do or say whatever was necessary to get what/where she wanted.
I vowed I'd never be like that, and I never have beeen. It hasn't made me a lot of false friends, but then who needs false friends?

KathrynP Thu 25-Jan-24 11:21:19

I used to accompany disabled children on skiing holidays in Italy and at dinner we’d choose our meal for the next day. One mother warned me her 9 yr old son would only ate chicken so that week he ate ‘chicken beef’ , ‘chicken pork’, and ‘chicken lamb’ and scoffed the lot. Mum was surprised.
