It was a good slow cooked ox cheek casserole.

No idea! Sorry but it really doesn’t look terribly appetising, I’m with fancythat & others, I’d definitely bin it

How do you all deal with labelling?

I use plastic boxes or square Pyrex dishes with plastic lids. They are expensive but last for years. Mine were on offer from a supermarket many years ago.
Then use address labels and indelible pen.
Or write on the lid (it scrubs off)

I am envious of how clean your cooker is Sago. I'm off to clean mine!

Marydoll It’s an awful job cleaning ovens.
I’m very good at cleaning the exterior and hob, the ovens are a different matter!
I have a Lacanche range, it’s a real workhorse, heavily used and 11 years old.
Every January I have it professionally cleaned.

I label everything but the labels often fall off. The last batch of labels I got, the reviewers on the site said that they stuck well. They are better than the ones I had before but I've still lost a couple. My main criterion for choosing them was that they should also come OFF as, despite some falling off. I also have lots of lids with remnants of sticky labels which even stand up to multiple runs in the dishwasher.

I can't seem to get into the habit of freezing stuff until it's in a solid cube and then transferring it to a freezer bag, which I can write on directly, so no label needed.

How do you all deal with labelling?

I use IKEA freezer bags, they are the best, I can reuse them many times.
I use a marker pen and mark on the top of the bag.
I also use large natural yoghurt tubs for soups, again a marker pen.

Glad it turned out to be something you fancied eating and did not end up in the bin.
My mother's scatterbrained friend bought a side of pig, jointed and frozen. On getting one of the last pieces out, the label had disappeared. Thinking it was defrosted she put it in the oven only to find an ear prung up. It went in the bin.

This made me smile Sago - I have done this, insisting that I don’t need to label things because I’ll remember….🥴

I usually wait til fully defrosted, taste, then serve with rice, pasta or salad!

I'd serve it with custard 😁

If it looks unappetising I would definitely bin it.
I also certainly wouldn’t be encouraging foxes or rats by leaving it out for them.

It’s fully defrosted and is a rather wonderful beef casserole, I had used chantenay carrots and somehow they had all ended up in the middle so weren’t visible through the freezer bag!
I made it in around October as I bought 2kilos of Ox cheek on sale in Waitrose, I came straight home and casseroled it, we took one bag away to the Lakes for our timeshare week and this is the other bag.
I think it will do us 2 nights.
A pleasant surprise, it looked grim frozen.

I will tell you all as soon as I know, as it’s defrosting it looks as though there could be some whole grain mustard in there.
I’m thinking mash and peas as an accompaniment but it could be anything.

Pork springs to mind if there’s wholegrain mustard in there.

This could be a Eureka moment, not thought of pork!
I have made a pork and mustard recipe before.

Voila… it’s freezer surprise!

We once had freezer surprise in the form of rhubarb pie with veg and gravy !! I was 100% certain it was steak and mushroom pie until I served it up. Needless to say the labelling process got much better after that !!

Sorry but I would put it in the bin or out for the fox and default to a toasted cheese sandwich.

My husband used to keep fishing bait in the freezer, unlabelled. Some of it wasn't something you'd want to defrost & serve with rice by mistake! I would try to use it but be prepared to substitute an omlette or something if I couldn't identify it once it was cooking
