I never knew so much love

I'm a first-time grandparent. My only child, my son has become a father to in my opinion, the most beautiful child on the planet (I know we all feel that way about our grandchildren).
I just never knew anyone could love another person as much as I love my new grandson. I LOVE my son, but this is such a different, overwhelming love. I get teary eyed every time I hold this little boy. He's so amazing and watching the love in my son's face every time he looks at his son is just so incredible.
I thank my son and DIL every time I spend time with them for allowing me to be with them.
I am babbling now, so I'll stop...I just wanted to share this. I just never knew anyone could feel this much love!
Blessings to All!

Exactly! And it gets harder as we get older, and know that visits are less likely to happen.

So true Caledargirl - and your own adult child you miss so acutely when visits are over. ❤️

I have a son and a daughter, and five grandchildren, ages from 16-21.

Much as I love my GC, my own children, well in their 40’s, will always be first in my heart.

A friend reminded me that when she was expecting her first baby, I apparently said to her; “No one can tell you what it feels like (to become a mother), but when you hold that baby in your arms, you’ll know”. I’m sure that the GC’s parents feel that, which is absolutely right.

I still recall that feeling, that I would willingly die for my children.

And when I visit DD in Australia, if all the family are waiting at the Arrivals barrier, it’s still her that I am looking out for.

My take on this is you love your children but are in love with your grandchildren. If your children took the heads of the tulips they would have been spoken to severely to but if your grandchildren did that a photo would be taken!!!!

This is exactly how I feel. My love for my grandchildren is tangled up with the joy that my children take in being parents. It has never occurred to me to consider it as more or less. It is just love.

I don't understand how anyone can love a grandchild more than the child they bore, birthed and brought up.

This is just my own personal feelings. It's deep in my heart.

I feel exactly the same. It is a parents place to fight tooth and nail for their own birth children. This frees the parents to parent as they see fit. Peripheral but not overwhelming love (and potential interference) from grandparents can get in the way of parenting by actual birth parents

Congratulations and I hope you are always in their lives. Sadly I am estranged from my daughter but at least I get to see her beautiful girls through their dad, her ex husband. I love them all and always will. They bring so much joy that I sometimes feel like my heart will burst when they call me gran.

Maybe I suggested I love my grandson more than my son...That wasn't what I was saying, or feeling. Of course the love for my son is immeasurable!!! He's The Love of My Life!!! I can't describe the love I have for my son. I was just sharing that I didn't know how to put into words the amazing love I now have for this little being that is my grandson. I

Brilliant, Grayling1 - so true. I constantly scolded my children but my GC can do no wrong!

My mum was absolutely overcome with love when she saw my daughter.
I'm pretty sure she loved her "best", but I never minded.

Maybe seeing young grands takes us back in time to when our own were babies?Rekindles that protective love.
When DD first had a baby I found I wanted to run off with it.

I heard it said that you love your children but are in love with your grandchildren.
I just have a strong and abiding love for all my children and grandchildren.

That was a super quick deletion!

And me!

I love my grandchildren, especially when I hand them back to their parents! I think the best thing about becoming a grandparent is watching your own child’s whole world shift on its axis as they finally begin to understand all that you’ve done for them!

Reported by me too.

A bit of a faux pas Agnes. You have to pay for advertising on GN. 🤣

I feel exactly the same as NotSpaghetti
I love my grandchildren but nowhere near as much as I love my own children.

I'm the same. The love I feel for my own children just can't be surpassed.

Exactly. It’s like no other love. I can’t understand people who love their husbands, grandchildren, siblings and friends in the same way that they love their own children. I only have one child, but my love for him is like nothing else I have ever experienced.

Good to see the cat comes before your dh

Absolutely - & they both know it wink

Daultsmom, congratulations and welcome to the forum. Aren't grandchildren wonderful! I have 4, with a new one on the way and I love them all to bits.

I can't compare one sort of love for another, but I do feel pride and a bit of awe when I see the interaction of the children I raised with their own children now.

*I am somewhat baffled that people love to varying degrees*

That’s one of the strangest statements I’ve ever heard.

I love my children, grandchildren, my cat, my husband, my best friend, my sister, etc etc etc, but not all to the same degree confused

Good to see the cat comes before your dh.
