I live on the outskirts of Chester, so have no need of Hotels in the city, but when family or friends come to visit, we always book them into ABode.
You'd really need to get a taxi from the railway station, but it would be worth it, as ABode is wonderful, and less than half the price of the Grosvenor.
ABode is just across the road from the Roodee, Chester's racecourse, and a short walk from museums, banks of the river Dee, (lovely strolls and river cruises), the Roman walls (start your walls walk immediately by stepping out of ABode, and make your walls walk as long or short as you wish, there are lots of 'ons and offs'), Georgian covered shopping 'Rows' (wonderful shops, and history all in one), and more coffee shops and restaurants than you can shake a stick at!
If you're down by the river, there are great eateries, and if you're carnivores, I can't recommend Hickory's Smokehouse highly enough, it's superb!
The Arkle restaurant at the Grosvenor is fabulous, and expensive, but for a special occasion, wonderful.
La Brasserie, also at the Grosvenor, is less formal, and open for lunch, through to dinner, and we eat there regularly, we can even walk home from there, along the walls!
If you're working to a budget, and only going to be here for a few nights, the Premier Inn, which is about 200 yards from the railway station, has a very good reputation too!
Wherever you stay, you should have a wonderful time in my city, it's truly lovely! Have fun!
