Very rude post. People are aware of what's happening in the world, it does not stop them talking about every day things though.

It isn't really racist (conscious or unconscious) - which implies that the race being referred to is somehow inferior to the one doing the referring. It is the colour of the skin which the speaker or manufacturer is most accustomed to seeing nude and mentally imagines. It would be better described as old-fashioned, like mentally picturing phone boxes as red.

Makeup companies and tights manufacturers really need to wake up and realise that they need to change these descriptors, which are based in a subconscious racist outlook that nude skin is pink. Snag tights which fit a wide range of sizes have tackled this and call pale shades, milk bottle or coffee latte etc. referring back to 1922 and the OED , is only referring back to the lack of awareness in the past. We can do better

Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Has the OP upset someone on here in the past? Surely she is just telling us about a conversation she has with a shop assistant, probably in a light-hearted manner, regarding something she imagines the assistant might be interested in and find amusing. Not expecting for it to be investigated or reported back to HO, but purely as a bit of conversation.

Surely she doesn't need to be told to get a life - she may well have a very good one, which includes making conversation with sales assistants. It's surely just chit-chat.

I have always assumed nude meant colourless/transparent so thanks for putting me right.

John Lewis take note. Their assistants used to be knowledgeable but not any more. I was in haberdashery looking for a particular size of circular needle. The member of staff replied with " I haven't a clue, sorry"😑

If you look at the Revlon display of lipsticks they have a whole color spectrum under the label of Nude(s). The colors range from light to dark - just like skin tones.

They use the term Nude to depict a look of not wearing anything of (bright or intense) color, meaning women can choose a shade as close to their lip/skin tone as they wish.

Some women who are not into full makeup still use a lipstick to keep their lips moisturized.

Personally I’m glad that trend of lifeless “nude” is phasing out. The In Look now is Intense, Bold Colors, and Red - thanks to Taylor Swift

Yes, 'nude' is an accepted colour description.
Yes, the name is obviously derived from it matching Caucasian skin tone.
Yes, there's an argument for ditching it, for the same reason that Elastoplast no longer just comes in 'skin tone' but in a choice of light, medium and dark skin tones, and that - taking an extreme case - 'N***er Black' is no long found on colour charts.

Who cares, I love to pedant. The word nude has two separate meanings nowadays.
1. The flesh colour of the average Caucasian.
2. The state of being with no clothes on.
This is confusing and were I a black skinned person I might find this slightly irritating or even very annoying.
I don't think there is any harm in pointng out to anyone around that it is all a bit problematical.

Actually, I think you are making a valid point, but as others say to the wrong people.

In these days, when we quite rightly have to beware of making assumptions or labelling things in a way that could seem racist, the only way we can avoid giving offence is if we demand that makers instead of just labelling something "nude" or "skin tone" for a shade that no woman on earth irrespective of ethnicity actually is, find some other way of describing their goods.

Stockings or make-up should come in a range of skin tones, advertised as "Find the shade that suits your skin tone" or the like.

It is up to the OP which topic she posts it under, but it might have been better under "Pedant's corner"

Nude is a colour name, some brands do "transparent" though and that wouldn't actually be transparent for all skin tones as it does have colour to it, I know because I use it in winter

So, maybe some names changes would be appropriate

I'm sure OP knows about the state of the world etc., as we all do. But we all chat about all manner of inconsequential matters in our daily lives. We'd go mad otherwise.

Nude, as a colour, implies the colour of bare skin. Considering that the colour of bare skin differs widely, it doesn’t really work as a colour.

With regard to make-up, nude for me is not wearing any at all. Keeps life simple 🤣
