The Sixties! What are your memories?

First boyfriend suggested that we should have Albatross Fleetwood Mac as our song. If it wasn't for that song I'd have forgotten him by now.

ixion Your photo is exactly how it was. My friends and I all looked like that. We tried to be Mods but as we were students we couldn’t really afford the clothes. I yearned for a Gladstone bag and Courrege boots. I ironed my wavy hair and wore false eyelashes top and bottom. We often wore no shoes like Sandy Shaw. We smoked and drank cider or Babycham. We hitchhiked for miles just for fun sometimes. Wonderful days.

Nurse training, marriage and a baby all in the 60s not a lot of time for riotous living. I do have a pic of me in a miniskirt and white boots, obligatory at that time I think.

I remember Nelson Imp (Imperial) near my then hometown. Many great names performed there, including the Beatles. My sis would straighten her hair with brown paper and an iron before getting glammed up to go. I wasn’t a teen until the late sixties so missed out, the place went downhill a bit before burning down in 1976.
I also remember doing a dance that involved us all standing in a line - line dancing in effect - to a hit called ‘bend it’.
I didn’t ages practising with my sister.

My time in the 60s was mostly taken up marrying and having babies, by 1969 I had 4! Number 5 came along in the 70s. I lived with my grandma before marrying in 1963, remember seeing the Beatles for the first time on TV in 1961, singing "Love me Do", and saying to my grandma "They`re rubbish, they won`t get anywhere." I never did become a fan. My devotions were to Cliff and Elvis, Cliff faded away, but Elvis is still top of my pops.

I really enjoyed the 60's. I came from the quiet Isle of Wight into the lights of London and had a lot of fun. I was at college so went to quite a few parties and took part in marches and enjoyed meeting new people. It was a great time and I was lucky enough to meet some pop stars of the day when I worked in a hotel for a while. Those were the days!!!!

Stephen Still released thst song in 1970 so maybe it was conceived in the sixties !

My neighbour's daughters were all older than me in the sixties - so I watched them wear minis , make up and have boyfriends .
My mother was very strict.
At the time , I felt resentful that I was not having fun .
Now I think that she was right .
She was safeguarding me .
I still did ballet and horse riding .
I wasn't that mad on pop music as I've always loved the classics .
But -
I loved the Beatles and the Stones .
I also loved Tamla Motown .
Later , I think towards the end of the sixties , I discovered Jimi Hendrix ,Cream and John Mayall .
I made clothes so that I looked like a groupie ! I wore so much make up .
I used to stay with my friend , Bar who had lost her parents and had the complete freedom of their lovely old house .

I remember hearing Love The One You're With , smoking , drinking and feeling fantastic !
It was wonderful .
To this day that song brings back incredible memories .

Then there were the student protests late on in the 60s but they weren’t violent, just ‘sit in’s’. Can’t even remember what they were ‘rioting’ about. It was pretty widespread, I remember that. We were a tad more civilised then , perhaps ?

I was born in Houston, Texas in 1964 and can still remember alot of things as a child in the late 1960s..
I do remember that my parents would dress us up in our Sunday best when we went shopping especially if we went downtown.. I remember my father and uncle sitting up with my brother and me watching Neal Armstrong walk on the moon.. and my brother and I got the first edition Hot Wheels race track set and car for Christmas...
And family would still get together after church services at my grandparents for dinner and we kids played outside with games like hide n go seek.. Simon Says... Red light Green light... It was such a wonderful time to be a kid..
And I remember my father holding my hand walking me to class on my first day of school in the year 1969..

Yes, I remember it well. Sadly, so many buildings were demolished in the 60s and 70s. You will remember Petty Cury, Chestnut, and the lovely old yards (lanes) leading off it, crammed with ancient timber-framed buildings, one of them a former theatre where Elizabeth I was reputed to have watched a play. All gone to make way for a multi-storey car park and shopping centre which has been redeveloped yet again since. I like to think it wouldn’t happen today - but it’s too late. The Cambridge of my youth was a beautiful city.

What fabulous memories of Cambridge! I dated a handsome young undergraduate in the late 1960s and often spent weekends at Cambridge. Does anyone remember The Corner House in King Street? They were an authentic Greek restaurant and I had my first taste of moussaka and chips there. Heavenly! I found this old picture and you can see it on the left. I send apologies to anyone who isn't interested in Cambridge, and credit to the person who took this picture and put it online for us to enjoy. King Street has been mostly demolished and redeveloped now, and the Cambridge Brew House sits on that corner.

Oh yes, the May Balls at Cambridge. I went to two. Julie Driscoll had been hired for the first. Brilliant. I also remember Miners makeup from Woollies but don’t remember them selling Mary Quant, I lusted after that across the road in Boots. You probably remember the Pussycat Boutique Blue Sapphire, the first one in Cambridge. You could have a coffee there whilst drooling over unaffordable (to me as a schoolgirl) clothes and get your retail fix by buying a pair of pastel coloured Mary Quant tights. Happy days.

Yes to Julie Driscoll and I saw the Stones at the Trinity May Ball, can't remember who else but there were always amazing bands. The last one I went to must have been at Christs in 1968. I went with Simon Schama, my then boy friend and wore white crepe Ossie Clarke trouser suit.
White tights were a thing, and putty coloured lipstick (Mary Quant)

I mustn’t forget the humour also - John Cleese, Eric Idle, David Frost - so many more…. Wonderful memories.

They were later. I was at Cambridge 1966-9. Spent a lot of time hanging round Footlights. Leading lights were Clive James and Pete Atkin, Rob Buckman, Julie Covington. Germaine sometimes - she did her nun striptease. I also saw Prince Charles' Footlights efforts. My friend was in a relationship with the playwright David Hare and she had a ground floor room at Girton. Manys the time I climbed over him to get in after hours (though it was sometimes possible to bribe Charlie the night porter with 20 No 6.

It sounds so exciting, being in the thick of things.

The late 60,s and early 70,s . As free as a Bird , what great time I had ! I was the only hippy in our south wales town ! I used to smother myself in Patchouli .incense . I had a perm , platform shoes, flared trousers and loads of beads .
I bought Neil Young L,ps from the money I earned at a local fish and chippy shop where I worked on Saturdays .

I started college in 1962 age 15. Had a Saturday job and earned 15 shillings for a full day! Friends and I saved up to buy tickets for Cliff and the Shadows concerts.We were all madly in love with Cliff!😊 Oh the innocence of youth!

Ronnie Scott’s

I saw the Beatles and Bob Dylan live - also some other groups/singers who are probably forgotten - remember Johnny Tillotson? There were others but I can't remember them.
