Moving to Yorkshire help please

Skipton has a lot to recommend it. Lively town. Great walks.Still has eleven plus and separate boys and girls grammars which has its pros and cons. Dales close by

I think that the Calder Valley is very inviting .
The only down side - it can flood badly .
I know Hebden Bridge very well and it is exquisitely pretty and has a big population of Southern retirees .
Yes , it is a bit Happy Valley . I far prefer the locals to the Southerners .
Todmorden is four miles away and unlike Hebden Bridge has huge supermarkets .
It's extremely friendly and famed for being a place where you can glean to your hearts content .
Perhaps , Todmorden is more for younger people with families and Hebden Bridge more suited to the arty retired crowd .
I really like the down to earth plainly spoken Yorkshire people , who live in the Calder Valley .

We live near Beverley but also have a property in Ripon.
I would certainly look at villages in the catchment area of Ripon, the grammar school there is one of the best in the country.
Harrogate and York are both within commuting distance.
Beverley is too big now and the schools are over subscribed.

I used to live in Bradford (Saltaire) which I loved, and studied at Bradford Uni, which was good, and worked in Keighley. I wouldn’t to live in either nowadays, but Bradford Grammar is excellent. Nearby Ilkley is nice with moor walks.

You could look around South West Sheffield for its very good schools, nice properties, beautiful woods and green spaces and its close proximity to the Peak District, but property there comes at a steep price in the catchment areas for those good schools. There are other lovely areas but you won’t get the schools.

I fully recommend the Calder valley. Handy for both Leeds and Manchester. Lovely communities in Hebden Bridge and lots going on. Stunning hiking and walks on the moors. Lots of independent shops and cafes. Avoid Bradford.

Isn’t the Calder Valley the setting for Happy Valley tv series?!

Saw a programme a few years ago about West Yorkshire and it
Looked equally uninviting, Bradford and Keighly , Keithley? In particular.
North Yorkshire looks lovely tho, a friend of Mum’s moved to
Knaresborough and sent lots of pics.

north Leeds is wonderful for schools and especially parks and woods for dogs. A village like Bramhope worth looking at. I moved here from London and its doggy paradise...(you don't want to be too rural or there is livestock and dogs have to be on leads.) You can't beat north Leeds. or the villages north of it...though bit of a golden triangle for prices. I met a wonderful woman vicar from Spofforth once so that might be worth looking at...

Gods own Country Primrose and I’m in Durham!

I don’t like the local stonework in Harrogate, I find it depressing. I also don’t like all the rain up there.

York is lovely but far too busy for my liking.

I love the coastal areas around Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough etc but even then, they get those sea mists that last until lunchtime. I also like Goathland, Richmond etc.

Yorkshire is OK for a holiday but I wouldn’t live there.

Hull Uni is excellent but I wouldn't recommend living there. There are some lovely little villages round Hull, but beware of flooding, the land is very low lying in all of East Yorks. That applies to some of the villages just outside York as well and to areas of York itself. A great aunt had a lovely flat on the river but had to be rescued by boat one year.

If you were referring to York university, you need very good A level grades, or a fairly high IB score. However some subjects may have slightly less demanding requirements than others.

Leeds won’t be easy to get into, either.

I too was wondering where you live now in order to make comparisons.
There are some lovely villages in the whole of Yorkshire, but not all will be near to cities. South Yorkshire is cheaper than north. West Yorkshire varies hugely. It depends what you are looking for really.

Please don’t take this as criticism, but I wonder where you are actually moving from? Your move seems a bit unplanned and random, especially with school age children.
It’s simple to use Google and I’ve a feeling most GN’s already know that Harrogate is a famous Spa town and an expensive place to live. York, also a big tourist spot is popular and it’s Uni has high standards for admission (I know both results and interviews for law) and again expensive rents nearby. Why not have a look on Rightmove and view some properties online.

Skipton or Ilkley? A friend was very happy with the local schools, though that was a while ago now.

West Yorks is lovely Heben Bridge and Keighley are very pretty.

I like the idea of all girls school

I should add that Beverley High ( girls) and Grammar ( boys ) are rated outstanding and are state comprehensives.
