How my many times great grandmother explained who was the father of the two children she had between the death of her first husband in 1581 and her remarriage in 1585. Oh to be a fly on the wall! I strongly suspect the father was her stepson, close in age to her, but I will never be able to prove it.
I thought I would never be able to prove who my Grandfathers father was, but I have DNA matches to the family of the young lodger who was living with his mother at the time. Mystery solved.
I’d like to go back and see my Grandfather, who I didn’t realise was born in our village along with his many siblings.
I can only imagine them all in a 2 bedroomed house, with no running water.
One of his daughters ( my Aunt) bought the house which would have been next to his home when she married, she still didn’t have electricity upstairs or a bathroom when I was a teenager.
Gas lighting and the loo was up the garden.
