Just saw this on TV. I have a tin in my cupboard and will keep it for ever now.

I can vividly remember the day our teacher at primary school told us the story of Samson and the dead lion on the tin with bees buzzing around him.

Our little school had just 3 classrooms. I was in the middle room so it must have been about 1961/62. It was a sunny day and our teacher stood with his back to the window. The sun shone in over his head and I could see trees in the background. He held up a tin of the syrup which he had borrowed from our school kitchen and pointed out the lion. He then told us the story and I remember telling my Mum about it when I went home.

Now it’s going because it may offend some snowflakes and we are having just a lion’s face that looks like a cartoon instead.

I wonder when and where, all this 'woke' stupidity will end?

Am I alone in thinking "woke"is a new idiotic superfluous word we don't need? Do I want to know what it signifies?

I understand it was a commercial decision by the company not made because of complaints of trauma, but because it was a bit old fashioned and maybe they want to improve their sales at the end of the day. I doubt whether 20% of the population know the Bible story, and most people don’t buy the product because of the picture on the tin. All those moaning about it should direct their anger at the company and go out and purchase more of the product to replace the 10 year old tin of the sugary stuff at the back of their cupboard.

Always thought the lion was sleeping after snaffling so much sweet syrup! Never saw the bees! Can't see the point of it all - except yes, of course, price will go up!

*SeaWoozle*, I wasn't having a goat you by the way. I was genuinely interested, as a lot of folk are quick to critisize Christianity, while supporting other religions that have failings of their own.

And I apologise sincerely if I came across as rather defensive. Whilst I (generally) respect folk for their faith and beliefs, I will also call out those who are using them to be divisive, hurtful and twist words to suit their own agenda. Be those words ones from the bible or ones from the mouths of people around them. And whilst I will always defend the right to free speech, I will also defend the right to respond. And I will always put my hand up if I am wrong, but will defend myself or others if I know I am/they are right.

Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as racial injustice, sexism, and denial of LGBT rights.

The term «woke» is very misused and misunderstood and is definitely not «stupid» it’s the way most decent human beings behave and I for one am happy to be woke and removing the picture of a dead lion from a tin of syrup seems like a positive step forward

Call me sad but this has made me look in the depths of my cupboard to find my tin to check on the state of the Lion. I confess I had never really looked but it's too late as I must have thrown it out as it was probably out of date. I have an unopened plastic Lyle's Golden Syrup that I must have replaced the tin with. It shows a lion on its side with what looks like rain around its head, in fact you could mistake it for a horse apart from the tail. To me it still looks dead; Thanks Primrose, I am obviously not as observant as I thought I was.gringrin

Scary the amount of people on here that have taken Gbeebies version of the word 'Woke' and ballsed it up....honestly, look up the word in a dictionary before talking Tory nonsense! Being Woke can only ever be a good thing!
By the by the only people acting like a 'snowflake' are those who can't cope with change. lol

👏👏👏

Babamaman Thu 22-Feb-24 14:22:27

Absolutely? Who is offended by a beautiful lion on a tin? Really!
If you don’t like it don’t buy it!
Really what is wrong with this woke world? Is the UK so obsessed ?

Lizzie44 Thu 22-Feb-24 14:19:00

Whatever next? Perhaps now that Parliament has fallen into such disarray HP should remove the Houses of Parliament from their HP sauce bottle?

It's a purely commercial decision. End of story. Haven't we got better things to discuss?

Clearly not. I mean, the decimation of Gaza, massive flooding in the Highlands of Peru, folk starving in this country and abroad. Nah, let's get our knickers in a twist about a bl00dy lion. On a tin.

Esmay Thu 22-Feb-24 14:14:38

I didn't realise that it was a dead lion .
I thought that that it was a lion stupefied by eating a quantity of syrup !
I hope that it isn't going to be another plastic bottle , which I can't open .
I either get my neighbour to open them or have to resort to cutting the tops off .
There's a lot of them - Listerine and
Hellmans bottles for starters .

CoolCoco Thu 22-Feb-24 14:13:41

When did bees make honey in a dead carcass? It would most likely be flies or maggots. Not so appealing.

I am glad you remembered the story of Samson, Primrose. It's a pity if Bible fables are not told any more, However that it the fault of religionists who tell Bible stories as if they were history.
The fable of Samson and the lion is no longer politically correct so it is a museum piece. And the syrup tins are getting good prices on Ebay.

Mr Lyle who founded the firm was an old style Christian.

What do you mean it’s no longer politically correct?

Christian Concern. Eugh.

Would you say the same if Muslims were complaining about something?

If they were radical and right wing, like CC are, then yes absolutely. Unlike some here, I follow various news/media sources, read different newspapers (national & international and even the ones I don't like!) and do my research as best I can before making statements I can't back up. The guy who runs CC is unkind, a stirrer and very definitely not a Christian in the true sense of the word. But that's just my opinion, though very much based on what I've read from their own media statements and scribblings.

I m very happy to be ‘woke’ and what’s wrong with change ?
No wonder the lions sleeping he’s so blooming old had his day I think

BlueBelle Thu 22-Feb-24 14:03:02

As did I alison never knew it was anything more than a sleeping lion

Alison333 Thu 22-Feb-24 14:02:13

I thought the lion was having a rest!

crazyH Thu 22-Feb-24 13:40:04

I’ve never liked it - sort of a bitter taste (in my opinion)

Cossy Thu 22-Feb-24 13:38:11

Honestly, I really object to the words “snowflake” and “woke”! We misuse the word “woke” constantly and it’s more about injustice, especially towards people of colour, than it is about offending people.

I think the whole rotting lion symbol is a bit disgusting and it doesn’t bother me at all that it’s being replaced!

It’s only changing on the newer formats; plastic bottles/pouring bottles/ individual portions. The original tins are remaining the same. All according to the report on the BBC website yesterday.

I expect those complainers have a stash of gollies in their house too.

My stepmum does - and she's black! grin

I thought it was a sleeping lion 😬

I did too…the age of innocence ?
