What was your favourite comic as a child?

I had Girl every week and sometimes saw Schoolfriend as well. I used to get Topper as well. The centre pages always had big coloured illustrations of all sorts of interesting things, particularly dinosaurs and birds and animals.

I think I was still reading Bunty while my school friend Jane was reading Vogue !

I used to love the Jack and Jill comic too, thanks for the memory of Walter hotter bottle x I also like the Teddy Bear comic, the stories of "bare bear" were funny. As her name suggests, she was always taking her clothes off!!!

I loved all the comics going but my favourite was Bunty. When I finished it I swapped it for my friend’s Diana.

I was once lent my boy cousin’s Victors and Eagles, put them in date order and read them straight through. What a bemusing creature the average boy was! All those war and football serials.

It became June and School friend! Loved Mandy, Bunty, Judy, Princess Tina! Couldn’t wait for the next episode of some stories.
Loved when you’d get a free gift with your comic and also the bumper summer special!

Saturday morning was comic time, my grandad would come back from the newsagents with:
Bunty, Judy, Dandy, Beano, Twinkle and Jackie for me and my two sisters. Always got the Annuals for Christmast too.

I loved The Beano as a young girl and the Bunty as I got a bit older but my favourite was Jackie when I was a teenager . In the 1960s I had all the pop group posters all over my bedroom wall . I used to make glue from flour and water to stick them all up . My mother wasn’t bothered that the wallpaper was ruined . She was very easy going .

Lovely memories. It was great getting the annuals at Christmas, with their new book smell. But the Summer specials even more so. I’d have a few lined up but never opened them till we were in the car and on our way (invariably to Blackpool or Morecambe, so my mother could say that the beach wasn’t a patch on ours in the Northeast 😂).

I used to have Twinkle in the 60s. My parents didn't let us have sweets however, ( well the parents never bought us any) our neighbour at the bottom of the garden would buy myself & 3 sisters ( I am the youngest) comics & a bag of pick n mix every Tuesday. They didn't have children & I think they felt sorry for us. At Christmas we would always buy them presents and go around and sit with them for a while. They collected Toby jugs so that's what they got every year. Nice memories just from a comic & sweets. One sister had the Judy comic and I think a Dandy & Beno the other sisters. At Christmas we would get the Annuals.

I'm afraid I don't remember Walter Hottle Bottle or the Jack and Jill comic.

I suppose my favourite literary character was Jack in the Secret Seven

My siblings and I only had one comic each, per year, for the train journey to wherever we were going on holiday. So we never really ended up having favourites.

I don't remember getting comics regularly at all But I did go to the library every week until I hit the dreaded teens.... when I started buying Jackie with my hard-earned pocket money.

Not sure Mum approved, but bless her, she didn't say anything... I still went to the library every week... wonder if they had copies of Jackie? not quite the same as having your own copy though, is it?

I don't often go to the library anymore, and I know I should - use it or lose it... but I still read, now it's Kindle Unlimited

I had a pen friend in Massachusetts and we swapped bundles of comics by post. I got Superman and various funnies and she got Girl and Schoolfriend. This was the late nineteen fifties.

Playhour(?), then Bunty, Judy, Tv Comic, School Friend,, Jackie.

I liked the boys’ comics Wizard and Adventure best. They mostly had stories to read rather than cartoons!

I loved Bunty too and could not wait for it to drop on the mat! Was not allowed to look at it before school though x

We weren't allowed comics as my Mum thought they were rubbish. However, I met Walter Hottle Bottle once at my cousin's and loved it. Nobody else I have ever met has heard of it and I didn't remember the name of the comic so it great to know I wasn't imagining it!
