I think the purpose of the battery is to keep the thermostat operational if you have a power cut.

In my experience the battery alarms work much better than the actual alarms. One of the most annoying things and like you say, they always go off at the most inconvenient time!

We were woken up in the middle of the night once by a high pitched alarm going off. It wasn't the normal security alarm sound, and we followed the noise to find out what it was but couldn't track it down. Phoned the alarm service company and they listened to the 'alarm' over the phone. Eventually one of them asked if we had a fire alarm near by - turned out the fire alarm battery had died, something we hadn't given a thought to but because it was close to the security alarm control panel we thought that was making the noise. Felt like a pair of idiots. Had no idea the fire alarm would be that load when the battery died.

They always pick their moments, don’t they? We are fed up with playing ‘hunt the beeping smoke alarm’ at the crack of dawn.

I went into a cupboard, to get some more loo rolls and noticed that the Drayton Digistat was flashing red! Oh my, what does it mean? Tried looking it up on You Tube, but no real help. i.e. " have you changed the batteries?" Well the thing is hard wired in.
Emailed the chap who services the heating.
Then, DH says, ( he can be of use some time 🤗), the room thermostat is a Drayton!!! So we had a little look, and lo and behold, there is a tiny symbol, like a battery. Out come the screwdrivers to open the box. We have changed the batteries, the symbol has gone and I think we have lift off. We shall see.
Why don't these flashing lights beep at you and say " battery needed".
Panic over, for now, and hope we stay warm. But we could do without these in the middle of the afternoon, just when I am having a cup of tea ☕️.
