Is Ivy taking over the planet?

I've never heard of that
Old Man's Beard is a plant that grows over trees and has white flowers and then grey fluffy seed heads.
I think it's wild clematis.

I've got too many pots as well. Need to get out there and sort them out.

I need to cut back (pardon the pun) on my pot plants outside.

I can't do the maintainence any more, and her upstairs ruined it for me last year anyway.

Loads of ivy round here. I'm always attacking it. But I do leave some in place for the birds and insects .
Last summer it grew up over the garage roof, and even wormed it's way inside the garage.

Mine is taking over the lady upstairs balcony.
It was only a bit I picked up and bought home from my mums, when she was cutting it back.

I planted variegated ivy (some of it was very pretty) to grow up a plain garden wall but it took off so well that it kept going over the wall and entwining around my neighbour's shrubs, so i had to get rid of it.

It doesn't seem to be ivy entwining itself round trees near us but wondered if it's Japanese knotweed. Certainly Himalayan Balsam is growing all along the sides of the road and river.

It has grown up from the ground floor, in it's small pot, and covered the wall at the side of the flats up to the apex of the roof.

Would I just need to find a gardener, please, does anyone know?

A gardener or handyman could do it. Alternatively you could just chop it off at the root and wait for it to die off (just remember to check for regrowth and chop that down too, or put some chemical killer green type substance that won't work on it). I had trees covered in ivy and just chopped it off above the root, made a huge difference to the trees and light in the garden. The trees were Ash and l thought they needed every assistance to fight Ash dieback. Was satisfying pulling the ivy off when it had died. Some of the stems were inches thick.

We used to trim back the ivy on our ancient back garden wall and my friend’s goats love it.

My new hedges are being ruined by the Ivy in my neughbours garden, combine that with her leylandi causing shade in my garden, destroying my plants aaargh.

Yes, destroying my hedges and far more unmanageable

I've just been outside, cutting down little bits of ivy, which are intertwined with honeysuckle, and four bats flew out!

It's not ivy that's taken over here, it's *&##π¥ honeysuckle! Not mine, it's spread from a neighbour's garden and, if I don't keep on top of it, it'll spread its tentacles around all my shrubs, across the yard and up the house walls! I have nightmares about going on holiday and coming home to find the doors inaccessible under this green covering....

I love having ivy in the garden but I keep it to limited height and growth by trimming and cutting off at the base. Robins especially use it as look out points.

We have a wooded area nearby which is now overrun with ivy underfoot and spreading rapidly up trees.

It may be invasive, but it’s very good for wildlife. Birds can nest in it, insects can hide in it, and the ivy on the walls of my old garden was always covered in butterflies in late summer - they like the flowers.

I’ve been concerned about this for many years as most of the trees around here are smothered in Ivy. Then I heard a programme where some “experts” said there was no need to remove Ivy as it did no damage.

I am convinced that it DOES damage trees though and we were out at the weekend and my husband commented there was hardly a tree not covered in Ivy.

I do think ivy can kill trees if the tree is old and weak. I planted. Gold leaf ivy up our bramble apple tree, it was only allowed to grow up short trunk but the tree fief. It was an old tree mind you, part of the ancient orchard that this small estate was built on. I regretted that planting the ivy but perhaps the tree was on it way out already.

Apparently if you wish to use weed killer you mix glyphosate with paraffin and spray in the winter no idea if it works

It certainly does its best to take over our garden, but a savage pruning now and then puts it in its place.

In my garden it is! I think it’s all the wet. Also never ever buy Vinca Jenny unless you want to cover your whole garden and kill everything in its path.
