New technology- getting left behind?

I sometimes wonder if there will come a point where I can no longer keep up with what is, for many of us, essential for life in the 21st century, new technologies.

There was a TV programme this evening on this subject, and how some people find they are becoming excluded in various ways, eg by not using apps or Q codes, those forced to change or lose their landlines, and thus their emergency pendants, or whatever they are called. Not having the right parking app when couns or cards are not acceptable was also discussed.

On the other hand, there are other people who stubbornly refuse to engage with any modern technologies. A friend who happily uses the internet told me she will never do online banking. When I asked her how she manages, she replied “ I have a husband” Unbelievable! What if he dies first? ( as mine has) . She then said she didn’t see why we (meaning older people) should be forced into having to adopt new ways.

So whether by choice or circumstances or stubbornness, what if we don’t or can’t keep up?

Maggiemaybe music at your fingertips.

The only downside is when DH forgets what room he is in and I am dozing resting in the conservatory and rock music unexpectedly blasts out. 🤣

I’m trying to persuade DH that we no longer need our pile of cds as Alexa or her sister Echo will play us whatever we ask for. I can live with his huge vinyl collection though as some of it may actually be worth a bob or two. smile

We use Alexa to manage our lights , including our outside lights at Christmas and play our own Spotify lists in different rooms at the same time.

Thanks kittylester

I think I only managed to get online because my son helped me. I really admire the other old ladies (and men) - I’m 84 -who managed it entirely on their own.

I use my iPad all the time for chatting, searching and shopping, but I haven’t got round to online banking. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for me, so I won’t do it unless I have to.

kittylester Sat 09-Mar-24 19:28:37

We have lots of Alexas - one in most rooms. I find them really useful.

kittylester Sat 09-Mar-24 19:27:34

Try going on the app or say to Alexa please cancel the 7am alarm.

crazyH Sat 09-Mar-24 19:20:18

I love technology. I usually manage quite well, but Alexa has stumped me. Other than turning her off completely, I don’t know how to stop her waking me up at 7 a.m., with a Goodmorning H and the weather forecast. I’m sure I haven’t set the alarm for 7. Can someone help please ?

While I do keep up with all the modern conveniences, I do feel for those who struggle with it. I don't like the idea of having to have another app for every store I go into, or on-line service I use. It gets tiresome. Also I think customer service everywhere has gone downhill because they rely on computerized help systems instead of actually hiring people to talk to in their call centres.

My older sister does not have a cell phone, and she is adverse to change. My younger sister lives near her and helps her out. Older sister's husband was sick and died during lock down, so it was impossible to manage filling out forms without going into offices, so she relied heavily on younger sister. I'm afraid she won't change now.

MissAdventure Sat 09-Mar-24 19:06:14

Yep, that's me, M0nica.
I do see no reason why I need one, apart from accommodating the world and his wife in their rush to do away with speaking people who can answer queries, and get to the crux of peoples problems.
As it is, we have an automatic AI voice saying "I'm sorry, I didn't get that!"

M0nica Sat 09-Mar-24 19:00:30

MissAdventure* you remind me of the people i used to deal with some years ago who could see no reason why they should have a phone.

MissAdventure Sat 09-Mar-24 17:10:30

I'm quite happy to be left behind.
I never agreed to become a tech wizard in the first place.

kittylester Sat 09-Mar-24 16:48:33

Access to my phone, and, therefore, all my apps is unavailable to anyone who doesn't have my fingerprint.

Woollywoman Sat 09-Mar-24 15:52:25

I do online banking, but only on my laptop at home. I have avoided parking apps so far - also paying for anything else by phone. If my phone gets lost/stolen, would my bank details be accessible if I started paying by apps?
Perhaps I should go and ask at the library!
Cabbie21, your question is something I wonder about more and more…

I was a bit put out today about phone apps. I am very computer literate and use apps etc on my iPad. However, I only use my mobile phone when out and only for calls. In B & Q today we could have got 10% off if we had had the app. I asked about getting the physical club card to receive said discount but they said they are phasing out the physical card. I feel this is discrimination against many of the elderly who don’t do apps.

I have been using computers since 1979 and specfying computer systems in the 1980s. Unfortunately no one has yet found a cure for dyspraxia.

However, voice activated software has supported both those who have dyspraxia or/and dyslexia. My daughter has both.

Ageist comment, Tenko.

Bit like the girl who admitted us to The Space Museum during lockdown. She sent DD2 and family to register electronically while handing DH and I a pen and paper.

I am a bit of a technology and gadget geek. I love learning new things, despite being a tad slower grasping things.
I was an IT co-ordinator and L.A Masterclasser when I was working. Frequently I was asked to pilot new IT programs for the Education department, I loved it when they didn't work the way they should have and I had to troubleshoot.
At the moment I am the editor on a website, always learning a new skill.

I am a sad person!

NotSpaghetti Sat 09-Mar-24 14:24:35

kittylester I love parking apps. Hey do charge you an extra 10p or so though.

Different car parks use different apps. I have 3 on my phone.
They all remember my car though so I like not having to input the info each time. Also, if it's raining it's nice to sit in my car to pay!

NotSpaghetti Sat 09-Mar-24 14:21:08

Missedout great info re Libraries for those who aren't very confident.

Our library also has a little café which is very welcoming.

Tenko Sat 09-Mar-24 13:46:41

I’m very confident using technology but then I’m younger than many on here .
Online banking ,shopping , apps , qr codes don’t faze me . I do my mothers home admin and pay bills etc online using the app for her bank . I’m signatorie on her bank and have poa…
She used to have a phone and laptop but forgets the password
I think it’s important to keep up with technology and not to rely on otherS

I do food and online banking and as Amazon is aware, I keep that company in business.

I would love to learn more but I do not have a 6 year old close by to teach me. I am 80.
