I agree with your taxi driver Urmstongran. Driving is one long struggle to avoid pot holes.

Another, potentially life threatening situation is worn away road markings. In a couple of places near me the white 'give way' lines at the junctions to roundabouts are completely worn to nothing. Ever time I pass I wonder if someone will just shoot out into the passing traffic.

I’ve just come home in a taxi from seeing my stepfather. Between roadworks with temporary lights (queues), diversions and potholes the taxi driver said driving these days isn’t pleasurable.

Seriously though drivers should slow down and try to avoid such pits in the road. It saves me wear and tear on tyres and suspension.

That’s not the formal advice though, apparently you should never swerve to avoid a pothole because you’re more likely to have or cause an accident. That’s why potholes are such a problem.

Three weeks ago I reported three large potholes on the road outside our house and they were all filled in yesterday. Our local council has been fairly quick with replies and letting us know when they were going to repair them. I’m impressed.

We drove along about three-quarters of a mile of road near us today, it was smooth and a pleasure to drive on. No pot holes 😃

Someone set up a crazy golf course in Malmesbury High Street.

It takes forever for anything to get done — especially when it comes to the local councils in the UK. A man so infuriated by the way his local council has dealt with “disgraceful” potholes on a busy street has decided to actually do something about it to speed up British construction.
Part-time gardener Ben Thornbury has ingeniously set up some “crazy pothole golf” on Malmesbury High Street in Wiltshire to showcase how brutal the stretch of road has become and force the hand of the Wiltshire Council.

I don’t drive, but my son drives an Alpha Romeo and the times he has to swerve to avoid a pothole or damage his car and obviously the swerving is potentially dangerous

Historians have established that the term ‘pothole’ comes from the age of the Roman Empire.

Potters who couldn’t afford clay would often steal it from the Roman roads as they were built on top of a heavy layer of clay – causing deep holes in the road surface.

Derbyshire had the most potholes per region, with 90,596 – followed by Lancashire (67,439) and Northumberland (51,703).

The area with the longest average time to fix individual holes was Stoke-on-Trent, with a massive 657 days. This was followed by Westminster (556 days) and Norfolk (482 days).

They obviously haven't visited Gloucestershire.

It’s very much council by council across the UK by the looks of it, it depends what they prioritise - I’m in the pothole heaven of the UK apparently!

Perhaps the 20mph on roads and 50mph on motorways in Wales is more to do with making sure motorists can see and avoid potholes.

There have been workers filling potholes recently in my area but whatever they use the potholes reappear very quickly. Money wasted and poor road safety for drivers!

Even here in rural Devon we have our share of potholes. They are a blooming nuisance.

Wales has many less potholes but I guess the traffic is lighter, the worst of all I’ve experienced is Kent, here there are plenty to avoid, probably due to more wet weather this year

And why do you think LAs do not have funds and many have or are about to declaring bankruptcy. Hint: being generous, welcoming and of liberal frame of mind is very expensive. Oh am such a bigot…..
