Faffing about in Older Age!

I read an interesting thread o'er yonder on the young folks' site entitled 'Please tell me we don't all end up like this'

I recognise some of the traits; the constant worry about food and minor details, obsession about set meal times, indecision, minutae becoming huge. Bins loom large as does the Radio Times.

Anybody else?

I've just thrown some string away.
I cut lots of bits for a project, which was much better in my mind than it turned out to be.

I feel I ought to have made it into a nourishing stew or something. 🤭

At 78 I do find I have to actually force myself to go on outings that have been arranged. But I think it is less to do with my age and more to do with the fact that I was seriously ill two years ago and that knocked my confidence a bit.

I'm struggling to decide if it's worth bothering to comment on this thread.

I've decided not to.

Love your mum MissA reminds me of my nan, string and brown paper

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 27-Mar-24 17:49:38

I must admit to not wasting string - very useful in the garden.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 16:59:25

My mum used to tie her rubbish sacks up with string.
She kept pre cut (by her) pieces in a little owl ornament.

Great point Churchview! Smoothing out old wrapping paper and stashing it in a drawer is fussing and being silly, or is it infact saving the planet.

I'm sure there are more of these.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 15:51:44

Our rubbish goes into (if we're lucky!) two big wheels bins, so I've no real need to faff.

I've been known to purse my lips and mutter, if people keep filling them up though. (The bins, not my lips!)

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 27-Mar-24 15:48:10

The bins are above my pay grade. They keep changing the collection days and it’s entirely his responsibility to keep up with them. I know my limitations.

BigBertha1 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:35:48

No faffing here and the bins are not on my job list. Lucklily we are both able and divide the work probably equally so no faffing - possibly a bit too much cleaning on my part.

We had a lovely neighbour who faffed around doing Morris dancing.

Is 48 young or middle-aged?

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:29:25

Oh, and then ask if there husband is being unreasonable, because he is unable to help, because he is doing "a hobby" (think Morris dancing, but not that) grin

😂😂😂

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 15:18:55

Their.

MissAdventure Wed 27-Mar-24 15:15:26

Then faff about with the parking, and need to go on social media to draw a diagram and ask if they're being unreasonable.

Then worry and faff because someone is there, but doesnt seem to actually have any recycling, so need to ask if they should call the police.....

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:12:59

MissAdventure

Most people, including younger ones, like to make sure their bins are put out on the right day because they don't want to have to store rubbish, surely?

It seems obvious!

Perhaps Mumsnetters don't put them out on the right day then have to faff around going to the recycling centre.

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:10:28

I am faffing about on here, though, just as they waste time faffing over there instead of doing something useful.

When I was their age 😂 I wouldn't have found time to faff around on social media sites!

Callistemon21 Wed 27-Mar-24 15:08:27

I know some faffers and they're various ages.

Sometimes I examine prices in a supermarket (price per 100g etc) but that is being efficient and trying not to waste money!

Perhaps we should all go over to the Dark Side and invade that thread.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 27-Mar-24 14:12:54

I can’t be doing with ditherers. Having had enough real things to worry about during my working life, I am more than happy not to be overly concerned now about anything over which I have no control. I certainly don’t worry about the bins!

pably15 Wed 27-Mar-24 14:11:16

I get a supermarket delivery every week, I can't be bothered to go myself as I don't drive , I cook our dinner when we're hungry...doesn't have to be the same time every day, the only thing I get anxious about is when things need fixed and I have to find someone to fix it...

Cabbie21 Wed 27-Mar-24 14:05:57

I make lists, but I can procrastinate. Not the same as faffing! I get impatient if someone hasn’t got their bus pass ready and I get frustrated at shop tills then I think maybe that person has not spoken to anyone for days.
Since DH died I don’t need to have the same routines but he needed them for his health, as he was diabetic. I am a creature of habit but can be flexible. I do find I am slowing down these days though.

Churchview Wed 27-Mar-24 14:02:29

The MN thread seemed to criticise older folk for having favourite items of china for meals, for taking time over things and paying attention to the detail of the little rituals that make up their days.

If young people do these things it's called 'mindfulness' or 'slow living' and deemed good for their wellbeing. If their elderly parents do it it's called faffing and is deemed annoying.

Bridie22 Wed 27-Mar-24 13:58:39

Love a list, lost without it...I am a known faffer, but I do enjoy faffing😄

crazyH Wed 27-Mar-24 13:51:09

I live on my own - no set times for anything…..but I am a ‘list’ person.

Iam64 Wed 27-Mar-24 13:47:58

If the posters on the dark side live long enough, they may find their behaviiur isn’t so different from that they’re criticising now 😀
