Bought the wrong Hot Cross Buns 😩

M&S were offering -trying to offload- some chilli ones one year, 2-4-1 so I bought them for Mr PG who loved ‘em! I’m a can’t beat ordinary ones, buttered, girl 😋

The chilli ones are nice 😁

When I was at DD’s last week, there were 3 HCBs in a pack - hot chilli!! - or some such flavour, also picked up by DD’s MiL by mistake.
I did try one - it was beyond foul.

They went in the food waste bin. We would have put them out for the birds, but thought hot chilli might not agree with their little tummies.

I am a traditionalist too although the cheese ones from M and S looked lovely in the ads on tv. DH bought some and they were a big disappointment so back to the traditional type this weekend.

My DS brought me a pack of Waitrose's 'St Clement' hot cross buns, allegedly orange flavoured. I couldn't detect much in the way of orange and there certainly didn't seem to be any spice. Their 'richly fruited' ones are more successful but not very spicy. I managed to avoid the chocolate versions which I consider to be an abomination! Best of the supermarket ones so far have been Sainsbury's which contain 'Chilean flame raisins' making them nicely munchy.

I prefer traditional ones but I do like the blueberry ones from M+S.

I was happy with traditional ones from Lidl. I had to buy 2 packets. One was described as luxury so I had to check the difference. 😃

talking about that very subject with friends today! M&S chocolate hot cross buns! why? we have chocolate Easter eggs whoever thought chocolate hot cross buns would be a good idea,, isn't it about easter..

I like just the traditional HC buns but they are lovely with a slice of mature cheddar sandwiched inside.

Am I the only one who thinks this year they seem flat and stoggy, from the Supermarkets? I tend to buy them at M&S, but I still remember them round and more bouncy or is my memory thinking of something else?
Wish we had a traditional Bakery near us, the Buns would probably be better. Next year I'm going to make some.
Still eat them though.

No you aren't the only one. M&S and Waitrose ones in particular have had a very odd and not pleasant texture. Far too dense and very dark coloured. The nicest I've bought were from Tesco's in house bakery. They were really soft, springy and fresh tasting.

Visgir1 I also find them very light and not bun like from M & S although they taste nice (I think they must use something to aerate them) but I tried Waitrose and the texture was so much better.

Unfortunately I do not live near a Waitrose if I had known in advance I would have stocked up.

I tried to make some once but they weren't very successful.

Bought some cheesy ones last year, but they weren’t very nice. Prefer traditional. Just going to toast some and settle down with a mug of coffee and a good film (hopefully!).

I agree with Oreo, nice tiles WW, but then I would say that I have almost the same right down to the colour in my shower room

Another traditionalist here, must go with our age! My thoughts are, aren't there enough chocolate products around at Easter without turning hot x buns into some sort of hybrid, neither one thing or the other. Some of the new bun offerings sound awful, I can veer off course slightly apple and cinnamon is ok, but not toffee or chocolate.

We bought some apple ones by mistake. They were quite acceptable but nothing beats the traditional hot cross bun
