Rinsing washing up

I rinse dinner plates before putting in the dishwasher but not side plates, and keep the rinse aid topped up.

I can’t imagine drying my hands or my hair or my laundry without first rinsing them, it wouldn’t occur to me to NOT rinse anything that I’ve washed.

Me too - always have rinsed any hand washed dishes etc. Who would want to eat off dishes that had soap residue on them?

Yes. I rinse all things hand-washed. I do items one by one and rinse as I go.
I don't towel dry anything.

I hate washing up bowls so use whatever I'm washing up to hold sudsy water, changing it often.

I didn't know washing up liquid was so toxic! I have gone back to using laundry powder for washing up. It does the job just as well and doesn't produce so much suds....and I always rinse.

Exactly nadateturbe that's what I do. The washing up bowl means I use less water than filling the sink.

I still rinse although I use a washing up liquid based on citric acid. I also use a good washing up bowl with a plug in it. The hot water would cool too fast in the stainless steel sink.

I like using my dishwasher too, almost every day, now that I have learnt what the automatic setting is for. My energy usage is now minimal

I always rinse. My DB worked as a chemist in the petro chemical industry and said if people knew what was in washing up liquid they would always rinse. He called it gut rot.

Exactly what a friend of mine said. He also worked in the industry.

I'm in a bit of a quandry. We're having a severe drought in South island NZ and my water tanks are only bout quarter full.
I'm thinking about hand washing the dishes instead of using the dishwasher but i like to rinse before and after so that would still use heaps of water! I'd buy a washing up bowl like you do in the UK and empty it on the poor plants afterwards.

There are people who live off grid who use washing up liquid (?) that doesn't contain anything harmful, and is often then siphoned straight into their flowerbeds.
It might be worth looking at what they contain; or you may be able to make your own?

I’ve got a dishwasher so that rinses. If hand washing I always rinse in clean water but my husband doesn’t.

Some use very little.

Mine has an eco cycle, which is supposed to use less water/energy than hand washing. I don't know what hand-washing method they use for comparison though.

I always rinse plates before hand washing (stacking as my mother called it). I use an eco friendly washing up liquid so don't rinse afterwards. I also rinse things before they go in the dishwasher but it is only me and my adult son at home so I don't put the dishwasher on every day.

I rinse before hand-washing, and before putting dishes in the machine. Is that rinsing or pre-washing, though? I don't know - maybe rinsing is the last stage in the washing process and the rough cleaning at the start is pre-washing?

I don't wash good glasses* in the machine, and would never rinse them after handwashing, as they are difficult to dry without streaks if the soap has been washed off. Similarly I sometimes warm plates by putting them in hot water, and usually add a drop of washing up liquid so that they dry more easily - the viscosity helps to get rid of all the water.

*or my favourite Woolworths ones, as they can't now be replaced

Think of all the water you waste if you rinse all the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

I remember a report once which said that washing up liquid was carcinogenic. I always rinsed even before then though. Since COVID, when we were told that soap needed at least 20 se ones to kill germs, I wash and leave to stand for a minute or so, then rinse thoroughly in very hot water.

I usually rinse the plates, glasses and cutlery etc, but after reading this thread I certainly will make sure I do every time. DH when he did the washing up always rinsed having read about the carcinogenic risk he now tells me.

There has got to be a reason for the 1 in 2 rates of cancer and it could be right in front of us.

Not Spaghetti my dishwasher is new and economical. I'll just need to get my daughter to stop rinsing them first. Or put them all on the floor for the dog to clean
