We went to see Uncle Vanya at a small local theatre - booked ages ago.
Just before it started (theatre was packed) the director of the company told us that the actor down to play the main character was ill, so at the very last minute (they didn’t run to understudies) they had found another actor to play him. He had had ‘5 minutes’ to rehearse with the rest of the cast.
The play’s run, she added, was sold out.
The bloke was amazing. Throughout the play he had a copy of the script in his hand, and gave it a quick glance now and then, but otherwise you would honestly never have suspected that he hadn’t been learning/rehearsing the role for weeks. It didn’t detract from a wonderfully convincing performance at all.
I didn’t catch his name, but 👏👏👏!
