Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

Always…yes when my daughter was a child we ate at the table but now I’m on my own I’d rather watch tv whilst eating. When I have company that’s different and I make it special with napkins etc. You do what makes you happy, I’m sure DD does.

I live on my own , a widow. I eat every meal at the table and cook them all from scratch, I even set the table for breakfast the night before as I did when we the give of us were living at home.

Morning tea and toast I eat sitting on sofa and watch morning news, the back french doors are open and the dogs wander in and out and all the bird song and feeding is going on so much more pleasant than sitting at a quiet lonely table in the kitchen. Later on in the day about 7p.m. I have evening dinner which I have on the sofa watching T.V . The dining table which is in large kitchen diner is only used at larger holidays Christmas and Easter or long weekend when family are visiting. Mostly there are art and craft stuff over the table and other odds and ends.

With you all the way, vegansrock. We only have one tv which is in the lounge and very, very, very rarely is it turned on before 5pm at earliest. We eat dinner between 6 and 6.30pm so usually watching the news. And like you always in dining room if we have any company. Breakfast and lunch in the kitchen. This is all since family left and we are now in our 'dotage' grin Why not!

Yes, always. For the simple reason that we do not have a dinner table. When the last one got too shabby and got thrown out together with the chairs, we had intended to replace it. But then that space was taken over by the cats as their play area. Now there is no room anywhere else.

not trays but on folding tables, yes with the TV on and if I am alone, with a book as well.

Hyacinth384 Fri 12-Apr-24 11:34:18

We have breakfast, dinner and tea on the sofa.
There’s just the two of us so no one else’s business really

Yes, we eat on the sofa in front of the telly

We eat all our meals at the dining table, its habit I suppose.
Eating while sitting on the sofa sounds as if it might give me indigestion.

We do.

Breakfast and lunch is at the table, but dinner I sit in my chair in the living room and watch the news. DH tends to eat later than me, so he joins me about 30 minutes later.

My kitchen is always cold so I always eat with a tray on my lap in the lounge..

In the past, I so enjoyed the whole family around the table, exchanging news etc. I do miss it. Now widowed, I still eat at the table, but always have an interesting non fiction book propped up so don’t feel alone although the phrase “He ate alone, like a dog” I read somewhere often comes to mind.

As a child, supper by the fire was a great treat. My father had a weekly newspaper and Ftiday night was when it was printed so he didn't come home until.very late. Mum and I would have the things WE liked- often seafood or something slightly more exotic than our daily fare which added to the feeling of a "treat". We didn't have TV but would listen to Friday Night is Music Night or a radio drama.
Somehow that sensation has stuck with me and I still find it self indulgent a treat at the end of a hard day!
As a family though we always ate at the table.

We always have dinner at the kitchen table. But we have an open plan kitchen /diner/ living area and can eat at the table and watch tv .
If we’re having a cooked breakfast , we’ll eat at the table .
Otherwise if it’s toast or cereal , we’ll eat on the sofas watching the morning news .
Similarly if lunch is a sandwich it’s eaten on the sofa .
I’m not at the stage of empty chairs yet and my mum started eating meals on my dads recliner chair after he died .
We’ve always had labs , so you have an audience when eating on the sofa .
But each to their own.

Mostly no - occasionally might have a sandwich in front of the tv, but generally have my meals at the table as I find it more comfortable. However, if you find it comfortable then why not when it’s just the two of you?

GrannyIvy Wed 10-Apr-24 20:42:28

Yes when just the two of us we eat our evening meal on a tray in front of TV. Always have our roast dinner on a Sunday up the table though and when we have guests. Breakfast doesn’t really happen just a bit of fruit on the run and a lunchtime sandwich usually at the kitchen table or on lap in conservatory. Why not we are retired and relaxed 😂

Hellogirl1 Wed 10-Apr-24 20:11:40

We don`t possess a table, so all meals are eaten on the sofa in front of the TV, whether it`s on or not.

grandMattie Wed 10-Apr-24 20:05:02

I always eat at table, but now I’m on my own, I watch TV at the same time.
Curiously, when I was a child living in the tropics, we ate on our knees outside unless it was raining.

grumppa Wed 10-Apr-24 20:00:28

Yes, the two of us side by side. On Valentine's night we spread a red gingham cloth on the coffee table in front of us. Must dash - time to cook dinner for eating off our trays.

Iam64 Wed 10-Apr-24 19:51:38

Now I live alone, I eat in the evening in front of the tv. Breakfast and lunch at the table.
Table used if anyone is eating with me

M0nica Wed 10-Apr-24 19:48:46

I actually prefer sitting at a table for almost everything, rather than on a lunging chair.

I spend most of my sitting down time during the day at my desk, whether I am working, reading or listening the radio. I raely watch tv and often sit at the kitchen table in the evening reading, with the table supporting my book.

We have just spent a week at a Gite in France. It was furnished the traditional way, with the main reception room dominated by a huge refectory table with benches each side and a modestly sized sofa between the fireplace and the front wndows. In the evenings those watching television sat one end of the table, while those reading sat the other. No comment was made on this arrangement all week.

My OH's hobby since lockdown is doing jigsaw puzzles, so the dining table is often unavailable.

We eat most meals on trays on the sofa, whether the TV is on or not. Our house, so up to us what we do in it! If I really want to eat at the table I can usually find a little space in the corner to do so.

However, when our AC or GC are here I make my OH roll up his jigsaw and we eat at the table. We all enjoy the social aspect of chatting over a meal once in a while.

Gummie Wed 10-Apr-24 18:39:35

Yes every night I sit on the sofa and eat my dinner in front of the telly. I have my lunch at the dining table and my breakfast in my office while I in my morning meeting.

You do you OP and have your dinner wherever you like.

silverlining48 Wed 10-Apr-24 18:20:23

Dinner at the table. Bending over a plate of hot food is just not comfortable., nor good for the digestion.
Sandwiches sometimes eaten while sitting on the sofa watching tv. Don’t need to lean forward so much.
