Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

We always eat dinner at the table in the dining room.
Lunch on our knee.

Just once a week on our Curry take out night.

We do the same on pizza night!

Of course! Eat all our meals there. Who doesn't enjoy picking crumbs out of their bra?

There are times when I wish I could curl up on the sofa and tuck in, but I am just not comfortable and would end up wearing more than got to my mouth.

Apparently both the late queen and her mother ate dinner on a tray on the rare evenings that they were alone. So you are in splendid company🙂

Yes, when it’s just the two of us, if anyone is here to eat, that includes the grandchildren, it’s at the table in the kitchen/diner. The only TV in the house is in the l. room.

Sandwiches or anything like that I eat on the settee in front of the tele.
Dinner always at the table with my two sons otherwise I'd need a bib.

No, never.

Occasionally, if we have pudding and want to eat it later, we might take that into the sitting room.

My table is in the living room, and I find sitting on the couch to eat is one of those things that sounds better than it actually is, for me.

So, i sit at my lonely table on my own, mostly.

Mostly we eat in the kitchen, but when it is really cold we have our supper in the living foom, with the fire lit and the television on. Lovely

We have breakfast and lunch at the kitchen table but our evening meal is usually eaten in front of the tv. We do still use napkins though. If we have steak on Friday, we eat at the table and Sunday lunch always.

I hate eating any meal other than at a table. I do not even like having breakfast in bed, and haven't since being a child.

I am fortunate not to yet have to face an empty chair. However I will probably be less affected than others because DH's job always included a lot of travelling, which continued past retirement. DH's last trip abroad was cancelled by COVID, so I am well used to eating alone with an empty chair opposite.

I didn't used to .
We always sat at the table covered with a tablecloth and would use napkins .
No TV on and no mobiles at the table .
If we have guests - we have the same set up .
Otherwise it's a tray in front of the TV .
I admit to becoming lazy .

No I sit at the table for all plated meals even though I am on my own. Trouble is I can get engrossed with whatever drama I am watching on tv and then miss my mouth when eating, too messy !!

Tink75 Wed 10-Apr-24 13:24:27

Yes now living alone can't see the empty chair at the table then!

Purplepixie Wed 10-Apr-24 13:22:21

Yes, yes and more yes! Once my youngest son left home then we started to do this and I love it. We have breakfast and lunch at the dinner table and sometime a large tea. If we have company then we all eat at the table but when there is just the two of us then why not? It’s up to the individual and what makes them happy.

We eat all our meals at the dining room table, but our evening mug of cocoa is in front of the tv.

Blinko Wed 10-Apr-24 12:05:03

Only if it's biscuits and cocoa. That what supper consists of in this house.

Louella12 Wed 10-Apr-24 12:03:11

Christmas Day is the only day we eat at the table.

Imarocker Wed 10-Apr-24 12:00:57

We always ate at a table when the family was growing up but I’ve lost the battle and DH and DD (adult) insist on eating in front of the tv. I suppose I could always go and eat on my own? We will eat at the table tonight as we are having Chinese take away.

If anyone else is with me when eating a meal, we sit at the table and no tv is on.
However, my wonderful riser/recliner chair is by far the most comfortable place for me to sit, opposite the tv. So, when by myself, which is most of the time, that is where I have my meals. Alongside it I use a trolley with a tray so that can be wheeled in from the kitchen with my food on that . Trolley sits side of chair and tray is on my lap. I enjoy all my meals that way and watch my choice of tv (recorded programmes0 at the same time. If any of my children did not like that, think they would know better than to make a comment.

crazyH Wed 10-Apr-24 11:36:34

Guilty as charged !

Theexwife Wed 10-Apr-24 11:35:58

I use a lap tray in front of the TV , I like to watch TV while eating, nothing to do with others what goes on in your own home.

From the South, call the evening meal dinner. I know its odd but the word supper makes me cringe especially when used to describe dinner or tea.

pandapatch Wed 10-Apr-24 11:32:21

When the children were still at home we always sat at the table and my son and his family always do. It was a time to chat, share and be together as a family
But times change and now if it's just us we often sit on the sofa in front of the TV, but never if anyone else is here
