Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

Yes we eat in front of TV every evening. OH comes in from work at 6.30ish so we do just slob out so to speak. Family gatherings are round a table. I eat lunch alone during the week from a tray on my lap and Dinner is in the evening.

we eat all our meals on our knee, not always with the tv on but at tea time we watch a recording of the Chase while we eat.
Always ate at the table with the children when they were at home as was a great time to talk and catch up ( horror yes I encouraged talking at the table!!).
The grandchildren eat at the table when here and somebody usually sits with them. No tv on when they are here and eating though.

I have just relented in the last couple of weeks, and allowed my boy to eat in his room.
It goes against the grain, really.

No, I never eat on the sofa, even if I’m on my own. This is partly because I have a tendency to drip gravy down my front, easier to deal with at the table!

One of the joyful benefits of being a childfree single household is that I can eat my meals as and when I like. I dont have to stick to regular times (although I generally do) and there is not one to judge me. Im not a great TV watcher but eating from a tray while I watch something for half an hour is how I break off from time on the computer.

We always had meals at the table when children lived at home, but we had a TV in the kitchen/brakfast room so could waatch. Since TV went digitsl I don't have a TV in there as they need an aerial point for a set top box or a more modern TV with an indoor aerial, neither of which I have. I only use the table now when family visit. I live alone and am fine eating on my lap. When my DD moved home for a while we both ate meals on our laps unless it was a very elaborate one. DD always eats on her lap despite having a dining table in her living room. My DS and his family usually eat at the table though they sometimes allow my GS to eat in the living room as he often eats earlier than them and wants to watch TV so I'm sure it isn't unusual. I expect many families don't posess a dining table!

Yes we eat tea (from north) on our lap. Table is reserved for when visitors arrive and usually needs clearing off 😀 before we eat

We always ate at table when kids at home but as they are all grown up now have no need

I drink my first cup of coffee just after getting up and dressed in my armchair in the sitting-room, but eat other meals sitting at the table.

We did eat in the sitting-room when DH was too ill to be comfortable at the table, which is one reason why I reverted to the dining-table after his death.

For three months or so, I could bear the sitting-room during the day, but not in the evening, when his empty sofa seemed to loom at me.

Yes with husband, but never when family are around, especially in the Winter in front of the woodstove.

NannaFirework Fri 12-Apr-24 16:54:37

Yes every night unless we have company then full works at the Dining Table in the Dining Room.
I guess we are slobs ! Sorry (not sorry)😘

It's entirely up to you. Personally wouldn't want to be that close to doggie snouts!

DrWatson Fri 12-Apr-24 17:11:42

As Soda and Cossy have said (others too) yes, we also eat that way, a bit later than some folk I expect, 8.30 or so?

We only have the one TV, and we can talk about drama, documentary or news along with dinner. Tonight I expect we'll make some salty jibes about the PO Boss being grilled today, claiming he had NOT known about any prosecutions (almost 300 of them in his reign).

On the food front, we do sometimes get joined by the cat, depending what we're having, so we save a treat or two for him (if he's in).

HeavenLeigh Fri 12-Apr-24 17:11:51

Well we are obv slobs ( I don’t think so though🤣🤣 we have our supper on a lap tray in front of our tele and quite frankly will do what we want in our own house rest of meals are at the table

Kamiso Fri 12-Apr-24 17:23:16

It depends if there is gravy involved!

Gundy Fri 12-Apr-24 18:58:21

Of course, we are not savages. We’re a pretty relaxed family bunch here and know our manners especially when friends/guests are here - dining room table! Otherwise, we play it by ear, whatever we feel like.

But when I’m alone I love to take my mug of soup and eat in front of the TV. I have a small plate that I can hold and eat a sandwich from, a pasta salad, hummus and veggies.

How about popcorn? That HAS to be eaten while watching a movie! I bet everyone here does that snacking thing in front of the Telly. Don’t kid me.

Not criticizing those that only eat at the table. That’s an old a Victorian thing to me. Go ahead.

Since I was widowed I have lived on my own. I eat my meals off a tray beside the woodburner so I can watch the news or read my book and sti.lbe warm. If I have family or friends round we would definitely eat at the table. When late DH was alive we always ate at the table as he really disliked eating in front of the TV. When my children were at home we always ate at the table and my son and dil do the same with their toddler.

Greyduster puts it exactly - the empty chair syndrome is hard to ignore. Probably more important than where I eat is what I am eating, since I find bothering to cook almost beyond me and have a most unsuitable diet now there is no one to cook for.

yep that is me

annodomini Fri 12-Apr-24 21:00:39

There's so much 'junk' on my table that it's preferable to put my food on a tray and eat it in comfort.

Mogsmaw Fri 12-Apr-24 21:07:36

We ate at the table, a huge 6 seater in the living room with the telly off! But when the children left we drifted into eating off a small table in front of the tv. We only set the table on a Sunday. I remember the girls being appalled that we did this.
When we were both going stir crazy during lockdown we started eating lunch and dinner at the table. I even join him for breakfast. Now, if we’re both in at lunchtime we listen to the radio and finish with a game of backgammon.
We always eat dinner together, at the table listening to “get it on” ( Mondays to Thursdays) and play cribbage. We note down who wins, I’m 3 games up so far this year.

My husband died when young, our children 5 and 7, i could not sit at the dining table without him so tray on lap , when they were older dining table, when they married back to tray on lap

Jzpap Fri 12-Apr-24 22:35:11

Clearly my husband and me are Mr & Mrs Slob.
I didn’t actually realise there was any other way to eat tea/supper/dinner than on the sofa, tray precariously balanced watching TV!

Mojack26 Fri 12-Apr-24 23:51:38

Me as I'm on my own!

NanKate Sat 13-Apr-24 04:00:35

Each evening we eat our Tea with me on the sofa with a tray on my lap and DH in his chair brought up to the tv in front of the fire. I am of an age that we do what we want and enjoy the experience.

As DH watches little telly so I choose something he likes, mostly Michael Palin travelling the world.

When the family stay we all sit at the table.
