Anyone else eat their supper on the sofa in front of the TV?

My DD was horrified when she discovered us eating our evening meal on the sofa whilst watching telly. “You always insisted we eat at the table! “ she said. Well we eat our breakfast and lunch at the table, but in the evening after a a day of childcare , gardening or general being out and about we just want to relax in front of the telly for a couple of hours. If we had company of course we wouldn’t do it, but we enjoy our relaxing evening - anyone else or are we just becoming slobs as we age?

If a meal needs a knife and fork, I (and my young grandsons) eat at the kitchen table, also eg soup, when there’s both a bowl and a plate for bread. And breakfast is always eaten in the kitchen.

Later in the day I might have yogurt or a slice of cake on the sofa in front of the tv. Very rarely the grandchildren have a pizza in the sitting room, with tea towels strategically placed for crumbs and messy fingers!

i like that. sounds like all those hookah places, with people lounging out back on divans.
meant to be outside due to smoking regs . . .

No never, I live alone and all my meals are eaten sat at the table. I don’t enjoy it balancing on my lap.

Everyone to their own - however I can't think of anything worse!! Even though I live/eat alone I still lay the table for meals as I always have done, including linen napkins as I can't bear paper ones! Might sound a bit too much but old habits die hard. The way people are shown eating on TV and lack of basic manners, would put me off my food if I was eating in front of it!!

yes Katie, we do too, ..not even a tray..a cuppa and whatever we fancy with it ...sometimes a take away...

I've just enjoyed eating some flaky crackers for lunch, in the comfort of my sofa

Etoile2701 Fri 12-Apr-24 12:48:27

Yes and breakfast and lunch too.

the trick is not to eat anything that requires more than one implement to be used, usually a spoon.
with soup i add the bread or crackers directly into the soup bowl/mug while in the kitchen, so all can be dealt with just a spoon.
wasn't it the french who said, the english do their butchery at the table.
i prefer to do all prep inc any necessary cutting or mixing, while still in the kitchen.
then sit down, relax to eat with spoon and bowl, while reading GN; paces it nicely.

Yes often. Since my husband died in 2017..he hated eating on his knee so we never did. I love it! Watch TV or Netflix !
I'm from the South.. its dinner 6pm...lunch 1pm !!!

Even though I'm on my own now I invariably eat at the table, mats, napkin etc. Possibly not a serving dish. I do have the radio on. Kindle to hand or possibly Netflix on laptop in the evening. If snacks then yes on the sofa. I hate eating from my lap or in bed.

My DCs were brought up the same. DD does same. DS not so much.

I don't have room for a dining table, but I do have a fold up one. I make a mess eating off my lap. My house is too small for entertaining, I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

..

Summer/light-nights - always at the table with cloth, napkins, water jug and glasses, cruet, place mats etc. Lovely views of the garden.

Winter/dark-nights - on large cushioned lap trays watching something on catchup.

All year - Lunchtime sandwich or wrap and yoghurt whilst comfortably watching an episode of something interesting. At the moment it's 'Clocking Off' from the BBC iPlayer. In a few weeks it will be the new series of 'Clarkson's Farm' on AmazonPrime.

It's your life and your home. Do what the heck you like as long as you don't frighten the horses (as my Nana used to say!)!

Ditto Grannynannywanny and Granny Somerset*]
I live alone and eat from a tray in front of the TvV for every meal. And yes, can't be bothered to make that much effort so some of meals are very much basic and often at odd times.

Glorianny Fri 12-Apr-24 14:22:00

I don't have a table either- it's all sofa eating now!
My eldest GS has fond memories of staying with me and having bacon sandwiches for breakfast sitting on the sofa watching cartoons. It was a lovely holiday treat. (and then I had a table)

I'm a widow and live alone. I always eat at a table, and have dinner at 8 pm with placemat, linen napkin and a glass of wine. I have the radio on while I'm eating, usually a detective story or a play on Radio 4 Extra. I quite enjoy this very civilised way of dining - when my husband was alive, he would just scoff every meal down in a rush, but I like a more slow and relaxed eating experience!

nadateturbe Fri 12-Apr-24 14:32:47

The dining table is for jigsaws and guitar paraphernalia Husband eats lunch there.
I eat on laptray.
Rare occasion we have visitors we use the table
Nothingwrongwitheatingon the settee and watching telly..

GrammaH Fri 12-Apr-24 14:48:42

We certainly do - every night we have "tea" in the front room watching TV. Absolutely nothing wrong with that from our point of view - why not? There's nobody else here that we're trying to impress & if there is, then it's the kitchen table for family & close friends or the dining table for anyone else. We always have breakfast & lunch at the kitchen table unless we have that British rarity - a hot summer day - when we may eat all meals around the patio table.

MickyD Fri 12-Apr-24 14:50:54

No! We wouldn’t dream of it.
We eat at the table, often with a glass of wine, and discuss the day and whatever else comes to mind then we relax in front of the TV/read/play Scrabble etc. often with another glass of wine - very relaxing 😀

Times have changed. Even in the South.

Sill lunch at 1:00pm of course (for ex-white-collar works - noon if blue!) but the evening meal is now supper.

Dinner is now the given name for a formal, business or official evening meal out.

Supper, to me, is a sneaky extra late night snack.

PipandFinn Fri 12-Apr-24 15:10:57

We are from the North and call it dinner.
We also eat dinner while watching TV and I always really look forward to it and chilling 😊

GreyhairedWarrior Fri 12-Apr-24 15:21:22

We eat our lunch and dinner on a tray in front of the TV. The only time we eat at the table is when we have guests.
