Last night GN was swamped by spam posts. It has started again and we are trying to knock them off the active list, as suggested by Elegran.

There is a lot more to these posts, than someone being childish.

Do they start early because they know the moderators have a lie-in at weekends?

They are automatic spam posts, sent by a spambot that scans the internet for places where whatever they are selling can be promoted. In this case, it must be promoting some kind of collection of witchdoctors in multiple African towns. Purely robotic, no human interaction at all beyond programming the bot to take advantage of every opportunity. (and whoever runs the bot organisation will be getting a rake-off from every participating witchdoctor they have sold this marketing service to)

Think of them as the social media equivalent of those annoying piles of flyers from sellers of double-glazing or pizzas, or gym memberships, that appear unasked behind your front door. The people behind them think (if they think at all) that by flooding us with flyers they will catch enough mugs to make it worthwhile.

As Elegran said. They are computer generated from Africa and are known as "spell casters". They promise to send you a spell to fix your problems including financial, romantic and health.

I've seen them on numerous other quite normal forums where they pop up at random. Some of them are decidedly sinister and offer spells to wish for someone's death. The latter is often aimed at scorned wives.

They are of course seeking to con people out of their bank account details or to steal their identities.

I assume someone, somewhere must get hooked by them otherwise they wouldn't be so prolific on the internet.

I saw those this morning and assumed they were some sort of scam. I just didn't click on them to find out.

We are bumping threads that DON'T have the spam posts in, so as to put bumped threads above spammed posts.

If they read every post and made a decision before publishing it, they would do nothing else all day (and night) and there would be a long pause before each post appeared. It would be like carrying on a conversation using only written leters, delivered by a postie after a long train journey and a spell in two sorting offices.

I was more meaning, like there are vir us interceptors, or whatever they are called on our computers to stop sp am, or at least they go into delete sometimes, could not/would not GN have something like that?

As someone can probably tell, I dont know a whole lot about this subject.

I would say that X for example does not get sp ammed[well not that I have seen but I dont look on there a whole lot.
