You are nearly a septuagenarian. I'm well past septuagenarian, I've no problem with that fact, however, I am not you.

Perhaps tell your son that talking about your age upsets you?

I'm presuming it was your DS.

Perhaps he said it jokingly, if you were feeling sore after a hospital procedure.
"Well, it's to be expected, you are nearly a septugenarian, Mum" is ok.

You could say, "Well, at least I'm still here"

I am 67. Let me quickly add this is not about ageism!

My DS called me a nearly Septogenearian this morning which I found quite rude, especially as he has a history of making disparaging remarks in my direction. I also have low self esteem and consider myself to be ugly. I was feeling a bit down as I was being driven from hospital this morning after a fairly minor, but sore, procedure.

I repeat, I have nothing agains septogenerians! Just wondered if others might find this a tad upsetting.

Nope. Not in the least upsetting. Met a former teacher of my youngest child recently who informed me proudly that she'd "turned seventy" this year. Great, I thought. Then, somewhat later, it occurred to me that next year I will "turn seventy". How funny that I thought one of my children's teachers would be a lot older than me!

Especially as the child in question never tired of reminding me that I was "older than the grannies" of some of her school friends.

If there's nothing wrong with being seventy then obviously it's silly to be upset about the idea of being nearly seventy. You know this so give yourself a shake and let it go.

I am soon to be 78, so only 2 years off being an octogenarian, and often think of myself that way. I therefore wouldn't be at all offended if someone else described me as this.
I feel there is plenty more to worry about as we age than a number! Take care of yourself, you are lucky to have family to tease you.

I am much nearer 90 than 80 and people can call me what they want as long as I am here to hear and laugh about it.

Its not what you say, but the way that you say it.

Whether this remark was ageist or offensive or not can only be judged by knowing the person who said it and hearing how they said it.

I’m sure you’re not ugly, I suspect you have low self esteem. Not helped by your son or husband making remarks about your age. It’s actually quite rude to speak of a person’s age unless it’s part of a general discussion. I’m 71 and I don’t need anyone to point it out to me. I’m sure you don’t either. Just tell whoever it was to restrain themselves from making comments about your age in future because it’s rude.

I agree. It’s a statement of fact. I’m glad you corrected the spelling too.

If you found it offensive, then it’s offensive to you.
I object when my DH on January 1st points out that next year you’ll be . . .
He has done this since my 40th birthday. On Jan first he said next year you’ll be 42, when I hadn’t even reached 41.
Try not to let it get to you.

Try this as a reply if it happens again:

"You'll be as old as me one day, if you're lucky" 🤨

Do you feel you might benefit from a makeover, eg are you happy with your current clothes, hairstyle etc.?
I'm the same age as you and I think our bodies change, seemingly overnight, and suddenly nothing seems to suit or fit right anymore ☹️😠

I've been called many more disparaging things than that but always in fun. As far as I can remember {!!} being a septuagenarian was decidedly pleasant.

I think you were feeling a bit down anyway. So several things you might have found a bit off. Going by my experience.

Cheer up Sallywally there are worse names to be called. I remember my dad going into a day-long sulk when mum called him a 'procrastinator'.
