Do politicians need sex appeal to be successful in these social media times?

I was wondering (again) if politicians in these modern times need a certain sex appeal in order to be noticeable or taken to be trustworthy.

I know past male prime ministers have not always been an oil painting eg Harold Wilson or Winston Churchill but then they were not photographed as much with the limitations of paper newspapers etc.

Were David Cameron or Tony Blair successful because they were youngish and handsome. They had that little twinkle in the eyes that people might have found appealing. Compare to Michael Foot and his shambling appearance and his lack of success.

Keir Starmer, to my mind, looks boring and stolid and not the dynamic leader we need to get us out of this rut we are in.

Do you think a physical image is more important than policies these days? Love to hear your thoughts.

Not sex appeal, no, but a strong personality helps. Nick Clegg is very handsome but not attractive as he comes over as weak and pathetic.
I think Richard Tice is extremely attractive and has charm too, plus I like his politics. Guess who I'll be voting for!

I find Tice repellent, and not just his politics! He was once described as looking like the kind of man who would charm a widow out of her life savings, and that description has stuck with me.

Apparently Rishi is sexier than Keir! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8969595/Britains-SEXIEST-MPs-revealed-Dishi-Rishi-Sunak-beats-Keir-Starmer-crowned-hottest-male.html
Tobias Ellwood seems to be the best we can do.

I really liked Tony Benn. He would have made a great PM.

Yes, I think it is because he had sincerity of his beliefs. My late Father, a true blue Tory (of the old school) admired Tony Benn because he would not be swayed from his beliefs, even if they made him unpopular.

Margaret Thatcher was one of the most manufactured politicians ever. Her hair was lightened

Good grief! I'm speechless. Can't a woman have her hair coloured/lightened? That would rule out nearly every woman in politics.

🤣🤣🤣

A warning to any woman - "Do not dye your hair, ask for style advice or try to speak proper!"

Sorry Callistemon21 I don't object to any woman changing herself. But the changes in MT were not of her choosing. She was very much manipulated by men.
The "speaking proper" which was actually deliberate lowering of her voice after opinion polls was something that she denied. But there is evidence.

That was a good idea.

I often hear women reporters on TV and have to mute the TV because the pitch, not the volume, of their voices actually hurts my ears.

A lower, more modulated voice is more pleasant to listen to. A high-pitched sound is off-putting.

Oh it was a good idea. But it wasn't hers.
There is some research showing that in meetings male voices being lower get listened to more than the higher pitched women's. But what is interesting as well is that women's voices have become much lower in the last 50 years. In fact the March of the Women written by Ethel Smythe for the suffragettes is too high for most women now.

Justin Trudeau 🙂

I mean the French man!

Joseann Sat 25-May-24 12:44:24

très beau!

MissAdventure Sat 25-May-24 12:44:07

Too young and pasty, Calli.
We'll get told off soon, I bet, for this.

MissAdventure Sat 25-May-24 12:41:57

That's the very fella, Joseann blush
Isn't he lovely?

Not in a suit, but was this him?

Joseann Sat 25-May-24 12:33:20

French politicians have a habit of unbuttoning their pristine white shirts!

Joseann Sat 25-May-24 12:32:10

Do you mean this fit politician, MissAdventure? If so, he's France's Health Minister.

MissAdventure Sat 25-May-24 12:23:26

Does anyone remember the PM of somewhere or another having his covid jab?

It's not necessary, but a handsome, suited, capable man in an immaculately fitting suit always brightens the day. smile

Twenty-five year old Labour MP Keir Mather certainly has it! He's handsome and distinguished looking and I think some women would vote for him because he's young and cute and some men would because he's gay!

He seems nice enough and down to earth.

Sex appeal ? Politicians? More a big turn off.

Sparklefizz Sat 25-May-24 10:31:17

Laughed out loud at that photo of Boris, but have to admit that he's good fun, doesn't care how he looks, is continually roughing up his hair and generally doesn't seem "up himself".

This doesn't mean I'd vote for him.

Thanks for the photo Grannynannywanny

What a fun thread😄
Good looks are an asset in any walk of life, so is charm.
If that were the only criteria for a PM then RS would beat KS hands down.
I never thought David Cameron good looking but he did possess charm so I read.
To answer the OP I really do think that looks matter now in politics and have done for a lot of years.
Robin Cook and Neil Kinnock, good MPs but found their looks and ginger hair against them.Ed Milliband slightly odd looking and eating a bacon sarnie in public badly, and was it also him or his brother holding a banana?
KS used to be quite good looking but hasn’t aged well and if only he would smile more! He actually has a really nice smile on the rare times he does.
Image matters more than in the past.
