Do you still have your charm bracelet?

I was thinking I haven't worn my silver charm bracelet for ages. I got it as a Christmas gift when I was around 12 (in the early 70's) and the first charm was an airplane to represent our first flight planned for the upcoming summer.

I love how it tinkles as I move, but drives me mad when it frequently gets caught on clothing. I have about a dozen charms on it.

I think the Pandora ones are fun, but not the same in that the charms are all similar looking. The original charm bracelets were all so individual.

I had one with many interesting charms on it . As I never wear it now DD asked if she could have it so I agreed . Now it is broken .

I’ve worn mine today.
This thread reminded me that I should wear some other pieces jewellery from time to time

I got a silver bracelet and a few charms for my 21st. My favourite was a rocking chair (can’t think why now).
DD asked if she could have it and I said yes as I never wore it. It played havoc with anything lacy you wore and snagged tights regularly.
I remember as a teenager seeing a barmaid who wore a very heavily laden gold charm bracelet which clunked every time she put a drink on the bar. She was a very brassy blonde who wore a lot of other gold jewellery and it definitely put me off having a gold charm bracelet.

Never had a charm bracelet, but I have got a couple of ten shilling notes and a couple of pound notes…..

I have my late grannies gold charm bracelet. I always admired it when I was small and was told it'd be left to me. It has a 10shilling note folded up in a glass box. A thistle, a stop sign saying I love you on it. A set of rings. Can't remember what else is on it. It's in a box upstairs. When I wore it ex husband used to complain about the noise it made!!.

I'd love to see a 10 shilling note again. It was a fairly common present when I was a child. The sight of that lovely pink note nestled in a Christmas or birthday card was such a thrill.

I’ve got one, it was one of my christening presents, but it’s absolutely tiny, meant for a baby. I must get it repaired, as one of the charms is off.

How nice to hear of everyone's bracelets (or lack of them!)

Well, I say we all get them out and give them a wearing. I have a friend's birthday dinner tonight, so I will get it out and hope it's not tarnished. I'm sure it will start a conversation amongst us, as we are all around the same age, so most likely they will have one as well.

My granny had one that was totally rammed with charms. Fascinating to look at all the different charms but it was really heavy.

My aunt got power of attorney for granny (the story goes that she slept with the solicitor!) and gradually sold all granny's antique furniture, silver and her jewellery, including the bracelet, to fund her hedonistic lifestyle. She even remortgaged the house.

I have a Pandora bracelet which is full of charms. Last year I gave my 12 year old DGD one for her birthday and she really loved it. Another birthday coming up soon so reminded to buy her another charm for it.

Oh I’ve just remembered I have a very thick charm bracelet! I’d forgotten all about it. No charms. My grandfather worked as an engineer in the early 50’s in South Africa and brought this home for my mum. It’s heavy as you can see. I used to wear it in my late teens, never since!

Urmstongran Wed 05-Jun-24 17:07:06

My mum was another who had a gold charm bracelet heavy with charms. A teeny passport, £1 note folded up in a cube with ‘break glass in emergency’ 🤣 a ring that if you looked through a spy hole were the tiny words of the marriage vows etc. they used to be very popular in the late 60’s early 70’s.

A couple of years before she died (6y ago) she asked me if I wanted it? “Not really mum. Would my sister like it?”. Nope.
‘What about the girls?” (Her granddaughters). “No mum I’ve asked, neither of them are interested”.

Mum said “well here, take it to the jewellers and see how much it will fetch and whatever they give you share it between the girls”.

As it turned out gold was at a high price at the time (serendipitously) and the jeweller passed me £680! The girls were delighted and mum was happy too because it had started to bother her seeing it just sitting in a drawer.

I have another little tale about this bracelet sale but I’m sure I’ve bored you all enough already.

On another thread I was the only one who had to work weekends and holidays from 13 to save up for my second hard dansette record player…..everyone else on gransnet got theirs as presents. envy Together with their silver charm bracelets….If I didn’t already know I had a tough childhood then I know now smile
It’s a hard knock life for sure. wink

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 05-Jun-24 16:52:14

It’s too heavy! I always used to wear it on my birthday but not now.

polomint Wed 05-Jun-24 16:44:43

How many of you are now going to wear your bracelet next time you are out at a special occasion, or not? They might come into fashion again if we start wearing them

MissAdventure Wed 05-Jun-24 16:41:05

They must have kept it from us!
A conspiracy of silence. grin

silverlining48 Wed 05-Jun-24 16:34:41

I had a silver charm bracelet as a child - it was very fine with enamelled charms and I loved it. Unfortunately, the bracelet itself was made to fit the seven year old when my grandmother gave me the bracelet as my birthday present, so one sad day, it no longer fitted me.

My mother had a silver charm bracelet that she had been given as a teenager, so she had my charms added to her bracelet then gave me it. I wore it as a teenager, but stopped when charm bracelets went out of fashion here in the mid 19
70s.

When one of my cousins became grandmother to a little baby girl - the first girl in our family in my nephew (her father's) generation, I sent the charm bracelet as a christening gift, explaining its history.

Yongy Wed 05-Jun-24 16:08:17

I have never had one. I wear my wedding ring and on special occasions my engagement ring. I had my ears pierced when I was in my early 20s. I have a lot of earrings and wear them everyday.

MissAdventure Wed 05-Jun-24 16:00:00

I didn't know people had them, particularly.
I know my nan had a beautiful one.

I used to enjoy looking at that.

pascal30 Wed 05-Jun-24 15:24:15

I never had one, it never really appealed... but my Godparents gave me a beautiful chunky sterling silver wheatlink necklace for my 18th which I still cherish

J52 Wed 05-Jun-24 14:32:47

I have mine, the bracelet was a large fancy link. I hadn’t worn it for years so I took all the charms off. It’s wearable now.
I bought one each for my granddaughters and put a charm on every year until they were 10. When they’re older they can choose what they do with them. The gold will have increased in value.
