Just that really. Seems that he went for a walk and hasn't returned.
He's ubiquitous on my various feeds. I've done the 5:2 and the 16:8.
Hope hes OK

We’ve walked in that type of terrain in May on the Greek islands and it is gruelling. Underfoot can be quite dodgy, rocks, scree etc make it hard going and dangerous at times.

We were much younger, and so it did not affect us, but at 70+ we wouldn’t tackle it now in that heat.

It looks to me, from the images, that he was wearing only trainers, not proper hiking shoes.

Thanks for the pictures and comment Elegran. That does rather put it into perspective.
Trainers in that terrain is
worrying too. When they set off by boat he probably hadn’t planned to return on foot, hence no walking boots.
It will be getting dark there soon….🙏🏻

Sparklefizz Sat 08-Jun-24 17:51:05

The CCTV of him shows him striding along purposefully despite the heat.

Yes, Bellanonna, it will be getting dark there soon and this will be his 3rd night.

Sparklefizz
This will be his 4th night.

I find it strange that he would have taken such a hazardous route as, it’s extremely hot, almost 50 degrees according to the journalists reporting from the island. He obviously didn’t enjoy the heat as was sheltering under an umbrella. It’s very worrying and I hope he’s found. I have always enjoyed his articles and programmes.

Just back home after being out for lunch with family and the first thing I did was to check the online news to see whether MM has been found.

Sadly I am amazed that he would go 'for a walk' on Symi with no phone, in the heat ....i did see somewhere he had no water with him either ......very very strange action for a man of both his age and his medical conditions and understanding ...I went to Symi but didnt even attempt the hill walks ....stayed down in the little village and visited the church , little shop and the cafe ..sat on the beach under a shade until the boat returned for Rhodes....fingers crossed !

I read today he was feeling unwell hence deciding to go for a walk, so very strange all of it. They had been a four some shortly before he left them and his wife reported him missing when he did not return from the walk by dark. So sad

Sparklefizz Sat 08-Jun-24 18:54:52

... and the Greeks apparently can't understand why he strode past 2 cafes and didn't stop for water, which most people in that heat would have done.

MayBee70 Sat 08-Jun-24 18:56:14

Why didn’t his wife go with him if he was feeling unwell? None of it makes sense.

He was carrying a backpack. More than likely had water in it.

Maybe she didn’t want to! And possibly tried to persuade him not to, too. With a backpack he was likely to have water. He was on a day out with other people so the ‘phone was not something foremost in his mind and he probably hadn’t planned to walk home. The ‘phone might have been charging anyway.

It’s a very worrying scenario and I pray we get some info soon

He's a think-outside-the-box doctor, who has helped so many people. Although he is courageous, it seems to me that his experiments - e.g. the snake venom - have been undertaken judiciously. I think he is far from cranky, rather a rare voice of reason who does not advocate taking a drug as a first resort. Also, I do not think he advocates 800 calories/day for life, rather for three days a week and there is so much evidence pointing to the benefits of intermittent fasting, which is, after all, natural to humans (I say this because we evolved from hunter-gatherers who could not rely on three meals a day). He must have done Big Pharma out of billions, tho' - could that...possibly...have something to do with his disappearance? I fervently hope he's soon found, but meanwhile I'll go and get my tin hat! :-))

Hoping he is OK . Apparently he wasn't feeling very well. On honeymoon 23 years ago in Egypt we arrived at a monument in an air conditioned coach. Once I descended into the blinding, paralysing heat I understood, for the first time , all those stories about people wandering away from their cars in the Australian outback and getting lost. That kind of heat fries your brains and you can't think straight. God willing he is found in time and will be OK. How awful for him and his loved ones.

Urmstongran Is he? There's no backpack noticeable in the CCTV footage.

I hope it's true that he has that with him.

Undines, food for thought. But hopefully not.

I have been following thread number 3 on Mumsnet and someone has linked an article from 2012 called Barry's Ramblings where he talks about taking a wrong route on exactly the same piece of terrain. There is also a really good photo from behind Symi and Pedi so you can see the 2 sea inlets and both towns/villages. You can see the route he should have taken and the route he is thought to have taken. In the wrong direction. It really puts you in the picture. Also on the thread there is a link to Twitter X where someone has walked and filmed the terrain leading down to Symi. It's very steep and rough. Full of boulders and gullies.

Aveline Sat 08-Jun-24 19:48:36

I keep checking back on the BBC news website. Oh dear. Time is going on.

Urmstongran Sat 08-Jun-24 20:06:52

Oh Sparklefizz I fear you’re right & I’m wrong. Earlier I saw cctv footage and it did look as though he was carrying one but on a still photo from outside the cafe at Peti, under his umbrella, this didn’t seem to be the case.

If not, then the situation is even worse.

Oreo Sat 08-Jun-24 20:10:48

There’s sure to be more than this than meets the eye, it’s very sad for his family and friends.

fancythat Sat 08-Jun-24 20:20:39

I havent read all the articles.
But he could have taken a boat somewhere?

I've just looked again at the still photo and I see the straps of the back pack and close to the hip the lower edge of the back pack.

Urmstongran Sat 08-Jun-24 20:27:11

Isn’t it distressing to think that all the time we’ve been discussing this (or sleeping) this poor man has been lying somewhere, hurt, dehydrated and frightened. If he’s conscious still. I can’t believe he still hasn’t been found.

Urmstongran Sat 08-Jun-24 20:28:23

That heartens me Aldom. And his family & friends too I expect. Gives hope.
