Which Ancestry site is best?

Just to add, Ancestry are hiding some things behind a paywall which were previously free. So if your membership subscription expired you could still see them, but now you can't. This applies to the DNA features, various aspects are no longer visible to me. But don't let that put you off, it's still well worth doing, Ancestry has a whole world of information, but they're not willing to give it to you unless you pay. You can always take out a month and look things up, save them to you computer and then come off again.

Chestnut I found it quite frustrating as I wrote to a few second/third cousins that popped up on ancestry but never got a reply and some others that had really bad inaccurate information Someone had my mum down on their tree with brothers she was an only child and another had my Nan married to the wrong man but they never answered me or changed it and I told them very politely

Tell me about it! I have also written to many cousins and had no reply. I think there are a lot of people now who have a passing fancy to 'do' family history but then life gets in the way and they drop it. You just have to write and then forget about it. Don't expect a reply.

These same people will throw together a tree and then abandon it. If you notice a bad mistake then tell them if you like, but don't expect a response. Then there are those with thousands of people on their trees. They are not interested enough to go for accuracy, so don't even bother writing to them.

Having said all that, I love my own Ancestry trees and I make sure they are accurate and detailed. Forget about the others unless you actually find someone who seems to know what they're doing!

With 23andMe you can elect to have your sample destroyed and data deleted. They warn you it’s irreversible. I’ve allowed my sample to be kept for further analysis with improved technology. For a yearly subscription of course! I used this site as was more interested in the health aspect, eg. having some genetic variants for breast cancer, Parkinson’s etc. Old age has made me increasingly aware that I had no medical family background.
I think Ancestry has a bigger database for finding family members

They keep it stored even after you ve left but they do have privacy rules around it
I ve not bother with them having my DNA it could prove useful in identifying me some day

I use Ancestry for research, but have not done the DNA as I don’t know who my data would be shared with.

Does anyone know about this please?
Also, what are the sharing parameters of the other details?
What happens if you "leave" the site?

Wow! How wonderful for you to find such close family. Sounds like an episode of Long Lost Family which is starting again on Monday I believe. It's so heartwarming to hear these stories, people who have never known who they are until now.

I used 23andMe as I’m adopted and wanted some medical information to tell my children. It was spot on. And an absolutely amazing bonus was finding my birth mother and two full siblings.

Ancestry is definitely the best. I’m also with 23 and Me, and MyHeritage. They’re ok and spread the reach of your research but I’m not convinced they’re worth the money.

I think if I was a beginner to it I d too would have found it ‘brilliant’ but it didn’t really add much for my money so I cancelled

I had also done a lot before joining Ancestry but I have also found so much more there. And don't forget they keep adding more records. When they make me an offer I take up membership again and find a whole load of new stuff that wasn't there a year or two ago. It's really amazing.

I also love how you can link each record to the person's profile so a marriage record can be attached to the marriage event of the two people. And all the censuses. And you can write notes about the event. It's never ending.

Then best of all, you can invite relatives or DNA matches to share your tree. I have a private tree, not a public tree. I make sure it is accurate so at least they get the right information, unlike so many other trees.

I'm registered with Ancestry and found it's brilliant.
I haven't done a DNA test with them but a relative has and found relatives on the database.

Agree that My Heritage is a waste of time, the country where I and all my maternal side come from was not even mentioned in my list of countries. .
Also I get nothing closer than 6 th cousin twice removed, as possible family members which frankly are too distant to be of interest, that us if I get anything at all,

I like ancestry. Find my Past is ok for some things but ancestry has more information. I run a little group and we mostly use ancestry to do our research, it covers many countries and we managed to find the Italian father of one of our group, confirmed with DNA testing.

I used Ancestry but after the first initial information I haven’t found out anything I didn’t already know apart from one second cousin
I think I was a bit disappointed but I had done many years of my own work and thought it would fill in many gaps but it hasn’t

Ancestry test results can be uploaded to most of the other testing sites, usually for free, so you can make more matches and use the various tools available elsewhere. Ancestry won't accept uploaded test results from anywhere else so bear that in mind.

Ancestry is definitely the best for both DNA and research. My DNA breakdown seems exactly right and matches my research back to 1800 on all my families. You can set up a tree and it will allow you and those you invite to keep access to the tree even if you don't keep up your subscription.

I've also had my DNA done with My Heritage and it was completely bonkers. There were countries shown I have no connection with at all.

Ancestry DNA, has the biggest data base and IMO is the best.
