Are you too scared to post what you really think?

Just that basically.

There’s been a few times that I’ve wanted to post something that I don’t think is provoking or malicious or offensive, but I’m really too scared to do so, just in case someone takes offence.

I never really thought that I would be too scared to say what I thought but I think it is now the reality of life in these days of everyone taking offence at the slightest thing.

Iany comments I put on here are exactly how I feel at the time. I may change my mind about something, just because I do , or because some thoughtful post on here makes me rethink my views. But basically I do not see the point of writing or doing anything that doesnt represent my true self. I dont lie to myself or to others in real life, I accept you have the right to disagree with everything I say or do but what you see is what I am right now. To be other than yourself is rather sad to me as you are denying your true self. You are as entitled to your view on life as any other, and are no better or worse than others so go ahead and be yourself. Of course in my view racist, homophobic etc etc views that I find totally objectional , will either get comments from me, or be totally ignored. My outlook on life is that I chose to believe all people are decent until they prove otherwise so that is my starting point to send comments on here. Of course in my view people like Trump Putin Farrage etc are already self declared as beyond the pale and are selfish bigots who are not worthy of the word human, so in my view they dont count, apart from resisting them and their dreadful ideas

Joseann 😀😀
We are near the sea and a big country park so tourists too. Plus of course our beloved 20.mph.

I thought they were cutting back on those 20mph zones.
Mind you, since Wales mentioned it, I realise that many of the roads round us are 20mph. I understand by schools, or roads on the estate, but alongside fields with a fence next to the road or on a road with no houses?

Oops. Sorry I thought you meant South West, England!

Yes but all spaced out. I am in the South West. At least an hour to get anywhere AGAA4

I'm in the South West too. Because ours is great long peninsular with lots of windy roads and poor train services, I don't think it would be very easy to organise a meet up for many to come to. (Plus all the tourists who by now will have arrived).

Living in Wales it is difficult to organise meet ups, and I don’t know how many of us there are. Anniebach and Pantglas come to mind but only because of their name. Might be good though

There are quite a few of us grans who live in Wales.

I felt like you to begin with Doodledog but actually it has made little or no difference to how I post. All those who have become friends will have been reading my posts before we met and know that I am pretty forthright in how I write and presumably that didn't make them take an aversion to me. Meeting them has made no difference.

Generally we post on different threads.

Thank you for your kind invitation * Marydoll*, sadly no longer able to travel far on my own. DH worked in Glasgow and I used to be able to join him. Happy memories of a friend's wedding at the Rennie Mackintosh House for an art lover. Like to read about the meet ups.

Doodledog
You do make me laugh but I think you're right.

Doodledog Sun 23-Jun-24 11:15:38

One of the things I like about GN is that I don't know people personally. I've been on a few discussion boards over the years, and they tend to fold or lose their way when people get to know one another 'in person'. The friendships are often valuable, but they stop people from talking on the board about personal things as they are tied to a real person instead of a username, and the threads become less interesting.

Moaning about your husband, discussing a tricky work situation or whatever is one thing if it's anonymous, but quite another if people know exactly who you are, where you work etc. In the end, threads are about what you've bought for the house, how best to grow begonias and pictures of the dog.

Sorry, didn't preview. Too many usuallys!! I don't usually write like that. 😂

I've met some nice English GNs, but one left GN and one rarely posts now. They didn't live anywhere near me but we met up and had a cream tea together. Cream first!

Oh no Joseann*, cream last! wink

M0nica Sun 23-Jun-24 10:06:15

There is a group based loosely around Oxford. We meet very occasionally and most of those present will be attending for the first time.

i will the first to say that I have made three friends through these meet-ups, although none of them know each other. Two post only very occasionally, and I get the feeling that we all are very sparing about being on the same thread at the same time. In other words about as non-cliquey as it gets.

I'm glad it's not only me using expressions like,
There used to be .......
In the past .......
All those accusations, sneers and digs were tiresome. It stifled expression for me.

nanna8 Sun 23-Jun-24 09:47:49

Sounds nice. You have TK Maxx there as well - good old USA, worldwide stores!

Marydoll Sun 23-Jun-24 09:38:17

Harrigran I was specifically talking about the Glesca Grannies ( we only started up after Lockdown) and you are very welcome to join our unique clique anytime. wink

I used to go the the Edinburgh meet ups, where a gran used to travel up from York on a regular basis. We usually ended up trailing round TK Maxx, (kindred spirits) before catching our respective trains.

harrigran Sun 23-Jun-24 09:32:41

I have been to a Scottish meet up with quite a few other English grans so not just from all over Scotland Marydoll 😊

AGAA4 Sun 23-Jun-24 09:25:01

Marydoll

*Nanna*, about fifteen of the Glasgow grans know each other personally, because we meet on a regular basis.
We are certainly not a clique, because we welcome new grans with open arms.

I use the term Glasgow loosely, because the grans are from all over Scotland. 😉

I agree with that as when I first started posting I had some very kind PMs from Scottish grans.

AGAA4 Sun 23-Jun-24 09:21:55

There may have been a few queen bees in the past but they have buzzed off now. I don't think there are cliques but if you have been posting a long time you get used to other long term posters and find those you tend to agree with and those you don't.
That is just like every day life though.

Threads tend to reflect political leanings - so right learners tend to support each other as Left leaners post similar thoughts or support others whose views reflect their own. That’s not a clique - is it?

nanna8 Sun 23-Jun-24 09:03:21

Just wondering about cliques, really. Do some of the posters know each other personally? I think it would be fairly difficult to form a clique online otherwise. I suppose you can constantly agree with someone and constantly disagree with another. Is that a clique? Perhaps.
