I've just been reading Ysenda Maxtone Graham's interesting book on women and work 'Jobs for the Girls'. In it she interviews all sorts of women from all sorts of backgrounds about how they came to be working and what jobs they ended up doing.
It got me thinking. My parents were keen for me to be well educated so I stayed on at school and did A levels. However, as soon as I could I got jobs in the long summer holidays. My first was in a restaurant called the 'Quick and Twenty' aka the Sick and Plenty! My first weeks pay at 15 was £5 13s 6d plus one free cake a day.
I went on to work in a hotel doing breakfast and lunches before arriving at my beloved Jenner's where I worked in all holidays for 6 years. I think my heart is still there in the china department.
There followed 35+ years in NHS.
